Alario Claudio’s History and Terroir

Diano is a sort of in between territory, at the edge of the Barolo  production zone, a sliver of which is actually in the DOCG, a source of interesting, often notable, Barbera and Nebbioolo. And, most of all, for its Dolcetto which, in the finest expositions, can rival the best  produced anywhere near Alba.

For twenty five years now, Claudio Alario has been the leading representative of the territory, the source of wines which many of his fellow citizens not only admire but consider to be the equal of many a famous bottle realized in more prestigious – but not better – appellations.

The barrel-aged Barbera d’Alba Valletta and the barrel-aged Nebbiolo Cascinottto remind us that Alario is a trained agronomist or that he is the heir of generations of trained cultivators and that he is well aware that interesting wine can only begin in the vineyard, with grapes that, in the end, make the difference.

This knowledge is seen in the various Dolcetto offerings, three in all, which underline once again that this variety is something of a specialty of the township.  Alario offers three in all, Montagrillo, Costa di Fiore, and Pradurent: the first offers pleasurable drinking when young, the second, more structured, is longer and fuller, while the last, rich and resonant,  well deserves the high opinion which it has gained over the years.

Since the 1990’s, however, he has tested himself with the Nebbiolo grape in the area of its greatest expression, that of Barolo, and his vineyards represent positions which have long shown what they can express in the hands of an experience and talented interpreter. Riva Rossa is an important cru in the township of Verduno and Alario does it full justice in his bottling. Even better is the Barolo Sorano, where the soil exposition, and climate all come together to create a wine of density, fullness, intensity , and length. A true Barolo of Serralunga d’Alba which the capacity of this grower-producer brings out in a contemporary, international style, one which illustrates the many different facets of the township.
