(MONTEFORTE D’ALPONE – VERONA) The Roberto Anselmi winery is one of the best producers of Garganega del Veneto IGT, the excellent selections Capitel Croce and Capitel Foscarino.

Anselmi’s History and Philosophy

Roberto Anselmi may seem an unlikely candidate for the role of rebel. Number one in his job. Son of a wine producer of undisputed success in the Veneto region , whose large volumes are widely appreciated in markets in many parts of the world. Trained to follow in his father’s footsteps, it seemed obvious that his work would continue to go in an already established direction, perhaps with some small changes here and there, modifications aimed at satisfying changes in consumer tastes. Nothing revolutionary, for sure.

Instead the changing of the guard marked the arrival of a new era. We are talking about a past dating back over 35 years, and it should be remembered that at the time the Soave , one of the historical denominations of Italy, probably the most renowned of all for white wines, so famous as to be one of the few in Italy which takes its name from a specific place (the town of Soave) had fallen quite low. Very large harvests and undifferentiated or industrial-style wine production have transformed this once important wine into a “suitable for”, and mainly sold in supermarkets.

This has also had consequences for the low prices paid for the bottles. Convinced that the Garganega grape and the virtues of the soil and the local climate could give much more, even without dreaming of the peaks that the recent bottles have reached, Anselmi began to work enthusiastically and soon began to reverse everything.

The wines of Anselmi

The overly productive pergolas were replaced with Guyot from low harvests, the grape quality was improved immeasurably, and modern fermentation techniques, temperature control in stainless steel tanks, gave the wines a new freshness and fragrance.

All this was then perfectly integrated into the larger structure and volumes now present. A revolution, in fact, that can be heard from the San Vincenzo offer (over 450 thousand bottles!) Up to the Capitel Croce and Capitel Foscarino selections . Reference wines, not always appreciated by colleagues, but the rebel, no longer so young, but still with an indomitable spirit, made his last move: the line is now offered as Veneto IGT wines , not as Soave, a denomination that the producer no longer feels representative of his own style.
