CLIMATIC TREND OF BAROLO VINTAGES:

Now that we have the ranking of the best Barolo vintages, discover in detail the climatic trend of the Barolo vintages, with an indication of the organoleptic impact on grapes and wines and the production of the vintages in hectoliters.

2020 – Best Barolo Vintages
The 2020 vintage had a mild winter without critical issues, followed by a dry and sunny spring with a homogeneous vegetative growth. March and April were characterized by good weather and mild temperatures, but May saw unstable weather with rain, delaying vegetative development. However, water storage in the soil prevented water stress during the summer. Despite a generally abundant production, thinning favored the quality of the grapes. The ideal climate and optimal conditions characterized the vintage, with the harvest starting early in September. The analyzes show excellent values of sugar content and acidity, with particular excellence for the Nebbiolo, which highlighted positive parameters, with technological maturation reached between September and October. In conclusion, the vintage is considered excellent, especially for medium-long aging wines, with ideal characteristics for important winemaking objectives.

Barolo wines 2020 vintage: The wines obtained have relevant shades and intensity. The tannins are softer and the wines more easily drinkable even when young. The vintage is characterized by a remarkable structure, with breadth and discreet acidity (although lower than the 2019), suggesting the possibility of longevity.

2019 – Best Barolo Vintages

The agricultural campaign had a slow start due to the prolonged winter, but the vegetative growth was regular thanks to the April rains. The season was characterized by delays and average temperatures until May, followed by a warmer period in June and July. In September, a hail storm caused limited damage. The harvest began early in the first ten days of September with a slight reduction in production in favor of quality. The wines have good alcohol content and higher acidity levels. In particular, Nebbiolo shows ‘classic’ parameters with a high aging potential. In summary, the vintage was traditional with quality production, despite a slight decrease in quantity compared to the previous year.

Barolo wines 2019 vintage: Barolo wines 2019 vintage: The analytical data reflect a good concentration of anthocyanins and polyphenols. All the wines stand out for their complexity, finesse of aromas and a balanced structure, where the acidity stands out, creating balance with a significant alcoholic component. Without a doubt one of the best vintages for Barolo in terms of aging potential and balance.

2018 – Barolo Vintage Chart

The 2018 vintage was characterized by a long winter characterized by precipitation capable of restoring the water supply of the soil weakened during the 2017 climatic trend. The winter season lasted until the beginning of March with temperatures below the historical average, favoring a slow vegetative restart of the vine. Both spring and the first part of summer continued with
frequent rainfall and a cool climate.

Between the end of May and the beginning of June there was a period characterized by numerous disturbances that led to abundant rains, which created some difficulties from the point of view of vineyard management.

From the middle of July the temperatures have risen significantly; the long and stable period of good weather favored the slow and regular ripening of the grapes, while maintaining the heterogeneity between the vineyards.

Sugar gradations increased in the last period of the season as well as an acceleration of phenolic maturity which allowed us to reach the harvest with excellent parameters. All this, combined with an ideal acidity level favored by good thermal excursions in September, will allow to obtain harmonious wines with good freshness.

Wines Barolo vintage 2018: The wines are generally characterized by more discharged colors than the average, with a good aromatic profile, fresh, pleasant and with a lower phenolic concentration. A good part of the 2018 production has chemical and organoleptic characteristics also suitable for a medium-long aging period. Perhaps not among the best Barolo vintages for aging potential but ideal for wines to be consumed in the medium term.

2017 – Barolo Vintage Chart

The 2017 vintage was arid: not only a great heat, but also the absence of rainfall for a longer period, which ended after more than two months with 25mm of water at the end of August and early September. The harvest was inevitably brought forward to the second decade of September, a period preceded by a lowering of the average temperature and by day / night differentials wider than the average. This fresher conclusion allowed for excellent development and the analysis data was encouraging, without resulting in irreversible damage. The temperature range is an excellent ingredient.

Barolo wines of the 2017 vintage: The Barolo wines of the 2017 vintage are characterized by very interesting, lively and deep intensity and tones, with intense olfactory notes, often alcoholic and fruity, and generally well ripe and soft tannins. In general the wines are endowed with less acidity and therefore perceptible freshness. Perhaps not one of the best vintages of Barolo but on average it is possible to find many balanced wines.

2016 – Barolo Vintage Chart

2016 vintage climate trend: The 2016 harvest was certainly one of the longest in terms of duration in recent years. January and the first part of February were characterized by mild temperatures and low rainfall.

At the end of February and throughout March, however, temperatures dropped and rainfall was also abundant so as to provide a good water reserve to the soil. Spring began with appreciable rains which, however, did not cause phytopathological damage but prolonged a delay in vegetative development. The delay in development that was observed in the first part of the year was bridged in the months of August and September with the accumulation of phenolic substances.

Barolo wines of the 2016 vintage: The Barolo wines of the 2016 vintage are characterized by an excellent balance with important aromas and an excellent structure, even if in some cases there will be lower alcoholic gradations than in 2015. It is therefore reasonable to expect a of the best vintages of Barolo, with significant characteristics which will be talked about for a long time.

2015 – Barolo Vintage Chart

2015 vintage climate trend: 2015 began with a winter characterized by abundant snowfalls which allowed an excellent water supply to the land.

This factor combined with a spring with mild temperatures since the month of February allowed for an anticipation of the vegetative cycle which was then maintained in the continuation of the vintage.

The season continued with a succession of rainfall between the end of May and the first ten days of June. From June to July the rains were absent and temperatures stabilized at above average maximum values but without water stress. The climatic conditions recorded at the beginning of summer laid the foundations for an advance in the ripening of the grapes of about ten days compared to the previous year but in line with a vintage that we can define as ‘normal’.

Wines Barolo 2015 vintage: Nebbiolo ripened perfectly, albeit slightly earlier than the average of recent years, with an excellent accumulation of polyphenols. The sugar content stands at average potential values of around 14 – 14.5% vol while the acidity is ideal for Nebbiolo (6.5 g / l).

The Barolo wines of the 2015 vintage are important, elegant and long-lived, there are all the prerequisites for a great vintage, to be remembered, like few others in history. Fully among the best vintages of Barolo.

2014 – Barolo Vintage Chart

Vintage 2014 climatic trend: There was a mild winter, while spring appeared on the vineyards of the Langhe gradually but early, causing an early vegetative restart. The beginning of summer saw normal temperatures allowing to maintain the small vegetative advance, which matured in spring. The amount of rainfall in the summer was above the average in intensity which, combined with the non-low average temperatures, created the ideal conditions for fungal attacks and the health of the grapes in general. The month of September was undoubtedly positive from a climatic point of view, with a good temperature range, contributing significantly to the ripening of the grapes and the composition of its phenolic framework.

Barolo wines of the 2014 vintage: The Barolo of the 2014 vintage has interesting potential, demonstrating truly surprising adaptability to our area. In the Barolo area, the situation is much more varied than in recent years, also due to the hailstorms that have affected the production area in “leopard spot”.

For Nebbioli in general it is expected to expect medium alcoholic wines, elegant, balanced, with good acidity and therefore long-lived, with excellent aromas rich in mineral notes. Perhaps not among the best vintages of Barolo.

2013 – Barolo Vintage Chart

Vintage 2013 weather trend: The 2013 harvest will be remembered as “vintage”, as the grape harvesting operations began on average 15 days later than in the last 10 years.

In particular, the beginning of the vegetative cycle of the vine was conditioned by the slow start of spring and by the average low temperatures of March and April.

The period between April and the entire month of May was characterized by abundant rainfall creating the dangers associated with fungal attacks. In June the conditions gradually improved up to the month of July which had greater meteorological stability. Nebbiolo is the vine that has benefited most in the final part of the season, in fact it has been able to enjoy the high temperatures recorded in September and October, ideal for developing the phenolic framework that distinguishes it in the best possible way.

Barolo wines of the 2013 vintage: The Barolo wines of the 2013 vintage are suitable for aging. The delay of the vegetative cycle was not recovered with the summer, however, from August until the harvest the climate was optimal for phenolic synthesis, with warm and bright days, accompanied by cool nights, especially from the second half of September. You will get long-lived and well-structured Barolo wines that will make the 2013 harvest an excellent vintage, fully among the best vintages of Barolo.

2012 vintage climate trend: November and December passed with rather mild temperatures compared to the average. Between the end of January and the beginning of February, colder temperatures arrived and lasted until February with heavy snowfalls. Spring was cool and rainy between March and April. Summer was characterized by medium – high temperatures, with low rainfall but without water stress.

October was able to benefit from significant daily temperature excursions. Particularly relevant is the quality and quantity of phenolic substances.

Barolo wines vintage 2012:
It was a not abundant vintage in terms of production, but the grapes provided well-structured and well-balanced wines that lend themselves to aging even if with average levels of alcohol slightly lower than in recent years. Among the best vintages of Barolo

2011 – Barolo Vintage Chart

Vintage 2011 climate trend:

The 2011 harvest will be remembered over time as an unconventional vintage, in fact it was very early and with not excessive yields in the vineyard.

This year was certainly very demanding for winemakers from an agronomic point of view, it was essential to take care of the balance between vines, soil and climate, choosing the best practice according to the objective to be achieved. It was therefore of fundamental importance to adapt to climatic situations and act accordingly, where this balance has been found, excellence has been achieved and great wines can be expected

2010 – Barolo Vintage Chart

Vintage 2010 weather trend:
The harvest campaign that has just ended was characterized by a harsh and particularly prolonged winter given the prolongation of the season until the beginning of March, which is quite unusual compared to the last few years, but on average if we consider a longer period of time. Long.

The abundant snowfalls guaranteed important water reserves in the soil, which, combined with the temperatures recorded in the months of April and May, favored an excellent bud break and good vigor by all the vines in the area.

Nebbiolo was able to fully enjoy the month of September where the good weather compensated for a slight delay in ripening due to the rainy period between July and August. Undoubtedly, Nebbiolo has responded in a sublime way again this year, proving once again that our area is its cradle, its natural habitat. It is therefore fair to expect that the denominations made up of Nebbiolo will be excellent.

2009 – Barolo Vintage Chart

Vintage 2009 climate trend:

The agricultural campaign of 2009 began with a winter characterized by abundant snowfall and a rainy beginning of spring that ensured an excellent water reserve in the soil.

These reserves were of fundamental importance during the summer, avoiding problems related to water stress that could occur given the almost zero summer rainfall combined with the great heat, especially in the second half of August.

The year two thousand and nine will also be remembered for an irregular ripening trend, determined more by the pedoclimatic characteristics than by the variety. From the point of view of technological maturation it is a vintage that is between 2003 and 2007 with many sugars and an acidity that clearly highlights the maturation process: at harvest the quantity of malic acid in the grapes was everywhere below the average. with low values to underline a complete maturation. Surely from an oenological point of view it was a situation with good potential that could turn out to be among the best vintages of recent years.

As regards phenolic maturation, ie the development of coloring pigments (anthocyanins) and tannic components, in grapes suitable for producing wines destined for aging such as Nebbiolo, data comparable to 2003 were found. Overall it can be said that, with adequate cellar care, the characteristics of the grapes lend themselves to aging. The general trend of the 2009 vintage requires a serious reflection on the vineyard which remains fundamental, in fact where the choice of the plant and the management proved to be correct, the product obtained was of superior quality. Therefore, the need to interpret the vintage and the vineyard in relation to the oenological goal to be achieved is increasingly emphasized.

2008 – Barolo Vintage Chart

2008 vintage climate trend:

The 2008 vintage was very difficult from an agricultural point of view and, specifically, for viticulture. The parasitic attacks, mainly of downy mildew and powdery mildew, have created persistent problems starting from mid-May throughout June and July, with some aftermath even in August. The damage, especially from a quantitative point of view, but fortunately not from a qualitative one, was considerable. The commitment of the winemakers was fundamental: the defense setting, the choice of the moment and the product used for the treatments, the agronomic practices that contribute to the defense itself, such as the control of the vigor and the accessibility of the land a decisive role.

When harvested, the concentration of sugars was on average excellent and the acid picture reached an ideal balance. The fortunate climatic conditions of September and October and the excellent care of the vineyards by the winemakers, who intervened both with treatments aimed at fighting the repeated attacks of fungal diseases, and with thinning of the bunches to contain the productivity of the vineyard, have allowed during harvest excellent levels of ripeness for Nebbiolo grapes: the acid picture is excellent, with a slightly higher fixed acidity than in recent years, at least for the first Nebbiolo grapes harvested, while the accumulation of sugars reached exceptional levels. Nebbiolo-based wines this year are expected to be excellent.

2007 – Barolo Vintage Chart

2007 vintage climate trend:

The 2007 wine year had a very particular climatic trend, with an exceptionally early germination due to a particularly mild winter that reduced the rest period of the plant. Flowering began around 5-10 May, about twenty days earlier than in 2006, followed by a cool period with frequent rainfall during the growth phase of the bunches and berries, which led to a slowdown in the phenological cycle. , however, only partially reducing the advance of the previous months. In July, there was no rainfall and temperatures rose, although the sultry days were very limited, thanks to constant ventilation and low relative humidity.

The general situation, upon racking, is particularly positive, with very good alcoholic grades for the late varieties and average for the grapes with early ripening, balanced acid frameworks and very intense aromas. The 2007 vintage can be considered “anomalous” due to the general climatic trend, with a particularly mild winter, a not very hot summer, with little rainfall and a harvest that is quantitatively lower than average but qualitatively excellent.

2006 – Barolo Vintage Chart

2006 vintage climate trend:

The month of January opened with climatic connotations similar to those presented in 2000, with an unusual persistence of thermal values below zero, both in the minimum, with peaks of -10 ° C, and in the daily averages. The drought that lasted throughout the month was interrupted by a heavy snowfall on days 26, 27 and 28 which deposited a blanket of snow up to 50 cm thick.

Even in March the winter-like climate continued and we had to wait for April to find typical spring conditions. Overall, it was therefore a rather long winter, cold and with abundant rainfall. The first ten days of May were still characterized by low temperatures. Overall, the water supplies in the first half were still lower than the historical average, also because they were penalized by the absence of the usual spring peak.

The drought and the scorching heat continued also in July, interrupted only by some minor thunderstorms.

The appearance of the first autumn rain was recorded only in the middle of September and put an end to the long period of drought. Two perturbations, one week apart, which – while presenting the typical continuity of autumn events – had the typical intensity of summer storms. Depending on the area, in just four days of rain, quantities fell equal to three / five times the average for the month and just under the sum of the rainfall that occurred in the first eight months of the year. The abundant water that fell did not cause serious problems for the grapes because it was almost totally absorbed by the soil that was in conditions of severe water deficit.

The climatic trend of 2006, characterized by low rainfall and the alternation of more or less long periods with temperatures above or below the average, directly affected the vines, which alternated moments of rapid vegetative development with others of Relative retirement.

2005 – Barolo Vintage Chart

2005 vintage climate trend:

2005 had an anomalous climatic trend, but overall more than satisfactory. A relatively mild winter with limited rainfall was followed by an early spring with cool temperatures but few rainy events.

Overall, the grapes, even after the rains, were in good condition, thanks to the careful agronomic practices of green pruning and thinning of the bunches adopted by producers during the summer. The first winery results show that the 2005 vintage gives good hope, the new wines have a good alcohol content, marked colors and intense aromatic sensations.

Quantity: 2005 was certainly less productive than 2004, with a reduction on the average values, which we can estimate around 10%.

Quality: The 2005 vintage, for the wines of Langhe and Roero, on a hypothetical scale of values from 1 to 10, is very close to the apex and indicatively we can assign them an 8.

Barolo Vintage Chart Rating: ✭✭✭✭

2004 – Barolo Vintage Chart

2004 vintage climate trend:
The abundant precipitations of the first months of 2004, added to the autumn ones of 2003, made it possible to restore the water reserves of the soil, considerably reduced following the summer season 2003 characterized by scarce rains and very high temperatures.

The following months were characterized by summer temperatures that were never too high, with the almost total absence of periods of heat and rainfall, conditions that allowed for a good development of the bunches that reached medium-large size. The delay in budding and the summer temperatures, never too high, allowed the vine to develop regularly, which however, at the end of August, was delayed by at least 10 days on the presumed ripening period.

The harvest operations in 2004 began later than in the last particularly early years such as 2003, and the grapes harvested reached quality levels above all expectations. It was also the year of shrewd and attentive winemakers, in trying to regulate and manage production in a balanced way with the plant’s vegetation.

After a short break, the harvest, accompanied by sunny days alternating with others with overcast skies but with reduced rainfall, resumed for the Barbera and Nebbiolo varieties. The vinification operations resulted in wines with very interesting and complex aromas, acidity of the right value and adequate alcohol content. The 2004 vintage passed under the banner of ‘normality’, with a summer that was not excessively hot, the right rainfall and a long and quiet harvest, which began in mid-September and ended at the end of October, but with excellent quality conditions.

2003 – Best Vintages Barolo

Vintage 2003 weather trend:

The climatic year 2003 was characterized by the persistence of stable, sunny weather conditions and by the almost absence of rain, a concomitance of factors that made temperatures rise to historic highs for the area, keeping them, exceptionally, for a long time. Period.

By comparing the data in our possession, it is noted that the sum of active temperatures above 10 ° C from January to the end of August 2003 reached 1740 ° C, against 1392 ° C in the same period of 2002. If we compare the 1997, considered one of the hottest vintage of the last century, we see how the thermal summation, at the end of August, had reached 1400 ° C. In practice, at the end of August 2003, the sum of the heat useful for the plant is similar to that of the end of September 1997 and the end of October 2002.

The good weather and the excellent health of the grapes allowed for a worry-free harvest of the Barbera grapes and those Nebbiolo vineyards where ripeness had reached the optimum point. Sunburn was evident on some grapes of the most exposed clusters but, according to the first indications from the cellar, the quality level achieved is high, with wines with a high alcohol content, the right acidity and an intense color for the Barbera grapes, in the Standard for Nebbiolo grapes.

The operations now completed allow us to archive the past one as a harvest characterized by great tranquility, thanks to climatic conditions that have allowed an orderly development of the harvest, respecting the ripening times of the individual varieties and individual vineyards

2002 – Best Vintages Barolo

2002 vintage climate trend:

The 2002 harvest, not only in Piedmont, will be remembered both because it interrupted a cycle of exceptional vintages, and because the weather conditions were anomalous, causing many problems for the entire wine-growing Italy.

‘From the spring and August rains to low temperatures, ending with the hail that fell in September – comments Giovanni Minetti, president of the Consorzio di Tutela Barolo, Barbaresco, Alba, Langhe Roero -, the world of producers was apprehensive until the end But, as is well known, nothing is taken for granted until the harvest is over. So, those who from July continued to downplay the production of 2002, especially that of Nebbiolo, will have to review his opinions.

Certainly this year there were no conditions for a great vintage, but for a normal vintage for all the vines: on balance, for late-ripening vines such as Nebbiolo we can today speak, on average, of even a vintage Good, with excellent tips.

From the point of view of quantities it is obvious that hail and other climatic and parasitic adversities have heavily affected production, gradually reducing the estimates for what at the beginning of July still seemed to be an abundant year: based on First post-harvest estimates we can now say that Barolo 2002 will suffer a decrease of about 40-45% of the average normal production, and Barbaresco 2002 of 25-30%.

2001 – Best Vintages Barolo

2001 vintage climate trend:

The winter of 2001 was characterized by a different climatic trend than in previous years, with a higher amount of rain. A good availability of water in the soil and temperatures above the seasonal averages, have favored, starting from March, an early germination, in line with the last few years, but above all regular along the entire fruiting head. The month of April was affected by little rainfall, but by unstable weather conditions that recorded the minimum temperature of the year on day 15, touching – 5 ° C with evident damage even in the vineyards where in living memory there had been no Such incidents never occurred.

To assess the quality of the black grape varieties grown in the Langhe and Roero it must be considered that the climatic conditions recorded from August to October postponed the achievement of optimal ripeness by a few days compared to last year. This slowdown was first caused by a hot-muggy August with no rain, which was followed in early September by a sequence of rainfall and falling temperatures.

The low temperatures caused a sudden slowdown in the vegetative activity in the vine, while the good water availability at the root level caused a sudden swelling of the berries with a consequent dilution of sugars and corresponding postponement of optimal ripening. The good weather subsequently established, then allowed all the black berried varieties to reach maturity in excellent sanitary conditions, with an excellent acidity and a good sugar content, even if slightly lower than previous years, all particularly early and rich in Sugars.

The Nebbiolo-based wines of the Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero and Nebbiolo d’Alba denominations have good alcohol levels, intense colors, ample and complex aromas, good structure and good polyphenolic richness. All these characteristics portend five-star wines, capable of facing the world stage with the best chance of success and satisfying the most demanding palates.

2000 – Best Vintages Barolo

Vintage 2000 climate trend:
The climatic conditions of the current vintage allowed us to look at the 2000 harvest with great prospects, with general characteristics comparable in quality to those of previous years.

In the Langa and Roero the winter was mild with little snowfall, favoring an early bud break of all varieties. A rainy spring, with a high risk of peronosporic attacks, was followed by a long sunny and windy period, during which the fruit setting phases (passage from flower to fruit) and the swelling of the berries followed. The veraison, or the color assuming by the berry, took place regularly in favorable weather conditions.

From mid-August to mid-September, southern Piedmont was affected by anticyclones that gave the area a long sunny period, with high temperatures and optimal conditions for the harvest of the early and medium-early ripening varieties. From the second fortnight of September there has been a progressive change in atmospheric conditions with the alternation of cloudy and rainy periods with sunny days. The late varieties, thanks to the high healthiness of the fruits, were not affected by this instability, allowing the harvest of grapes of excellent quality.

The Nebbiolo-based wines of the Barolo, Barbaresco, Roero and Nebbiolo d’Alba denominations have high alcohol levels, intense colors, ample and complex aromas, excellent structure and remarkable phenolic richness. All these characteristics make us think of wines with five stars, capable of facing the world stage with considerable success, with satisfaction for the most demanding palates.
