Domenico and Giovan Battista Basile owners of the Basile company have managed to obtain excellent red wines by focusing on Sangiovese, among them we find the red wine Montecucco Cartacanta, Il Comandante and Ad Agio Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva.
Of the numerous denominations that have come to the fore in recent decades, Montecucco , the northernmost part of the province of Grosseto , has enjoyed less visibility and prestige. A completely unjustified sin, but easy to explain by looking at the objective factors that have hindered the recognition of its possibilities and its potential. There is a huge influx of tourists to the coast during the warm months between Easter and October, but most remain close to the sea and do not go into the interior. And also, just north of Montecucco , there is the Brunello di Montalcino denomination , whose great reputation as a source of great red wine has certainly overshadowed the nearby areas.
In the last fifteen years, however, a number of estates have shown, with a production of high quality wines, that Monteucco is an area of real interest. And they have shown with certainty that an excellent Sangiovese can be produced in these vineyards. Rumors, obviously unconfirmed and unconfirmed, have also murmured that part of the harvest, on more than one occasion, has crossed the Ombrone river towards the nearby Montalcino area . And one of the most convincing wineries was that of Giovan Battista Basile , founded in Cinigiano in 1999 and, since then, a constant source of exceptional wine, regularly at the height of its neighbors to the north.
From the beginning it was decided to focus on the local grape varieties, there is a small quantity of Merlot in the vineyards, not bottled alone but used exclusively with Sangiovese in the Comandate offer , no more than six thousand bottles. The largest production, however, is represented by the offer of the Cartacanta house , something like 30 thousand bottles of succulent, dry and tasty Sangiovese , which should stifle any doubts about the capacity and goodness of the Montecucco denomination . The Sangiovese selection , Ad Agioinstead, it fully demonstrates, as the admirers of the area affirm passionately, that a wine of this type is not afraid of being compared to Montalcino . And the sweet and intense flavor of Vermentino , Artéteca , demonstrates the same in comparison with many white wines produced on the coast from the same grape.
