Bera

(NEVIGLIE – CUNEO)  Walter Bera has dedicated time and energy to making the wines of the Neviglie area known and appreciated. Its line is now full of successes, such as Moscato and Barbaresco, but also Dolcetto Langhe Nebbiolo Barbera  and  Barbera Superiore.

Bera’s History and Philosophy

The denomination areas, initially invented (or at least formalized), in France in 1930 are a fundamental part of modern viticulture for all the states that aspire to compete in the quality markets of the world.
This is to create a certain order, a space where rules and regulations have some strength, instead of a complete free everyone.
And, equally important, to eliminate fraud and counterfeits: when, almost a century ago, before the limits of denominations and production statistics came into force, it was estimated that the number of bottles on the Chablis market, probably the most prestigious wine of France at that time, they were ten times the true production of the vineyards.

It is also true, however, that drawing a boundary always creates some injustice. It is equally false that a simple border, like a line dividing an administrative unit from another, means that the small town X is a site for high quality wine while the small town Y cannot produce interesting wine at all. Roddino, for example, near Serralunga d’Alba , cannot be said to be unsuitable for Nebbiolo , quite the opposite. And Neviglie, located on the western border with the town of Neive in the Barbaresco DOCG , is not limited in any way to its undoubtedly excellent Moscato.

Here, in fact, Nebbiolo , Barbera and Dolcetto are also grown , and where there is commitment, experience and ability, the wines are often very convincing expressions of the grapes. And also of soil quality and micro-climate. Walter Bera , who has long supported the thesis that Neviglie had been unfairly penalized by past exclusion, does not defend his wines with words but, more significantly, with his bottles.

The wines of Bera

As leader of the town, he worked for decades to create a certain name to associate with local production, and not only with his Moscato (not to mention the selection, regularly one of the best in Piedmont), with high-level Barbaresco and Barbaresco Riserva, but also with its Dolcetto, Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera and Barbera Superiore (the full and spicy La Lena selection). To which has been added a classic sparkling wine and a sweet, luxurious dessert version of Moscato. An indication of his town and its wines.
