Bolgheri vintages climate trend

2021 – Best Bolgheri Vintages

Andamento climatico:

Climate trend:
Thanks to a winter period full of rains, it had a very regular pattern, with a well-ventilated dry summer and average temperatures never above the seasonal average. The good temperature ranges that began in the second half of August favored the aromatic finesse of the grapes.

Bolgheri of vintage 2021:

The wines of the vintage are convincing: marked acidity, ripe tannins and good extractability, important alcoholic components that never dominate the varietal one. It promises to be one of the best vintages for aging potential.

2020 – Best Bolgheri Vintages

Climate trend:

Hot vintage. The harvest, which began the second week of September, was characterized by the speed of the harvest
of the grapes, brought to the cellar between one rain and another, with the risk of dilution of the phenolic component. The climatic trend, in
in general, he proved magnanimous in a year that was in itself particularly dry, characterized by rains only from mid-May onwards. The summer trend was regular and dry, without excessively high temperatures.

The grapes actually don’t
presented no dilution data but immediately expressed an aromatic delicacy and
a different elegance from those collected at the beginning of September.

Bolgheri of the 2020 vintage:

In fact, the wines obtained are discreet although with qualitative peaks. In some cases with alcoholic components in evidence, undertone acidity and phenolic components that show some green notes in cases where an attempt has been made to harvest in advance to favor the acidity and therefore the freshness of the wines. Perhaps not among the best vintages for aging potential.

2020 Bolgheri vintage star rating: ✭✭✭1/2

2019 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Climate trend:
Both winter and spring temperatures were cooler than usual. The vegetative cycle, which started with a delay, then accelerated starting from the end of May when temperatures rose rapidly. The summer weather was sunny and stable, lasting until the end of the harvest, which was excellent from all points of view.

Bolgheri of the 2019 vintage:

Bolgheri’s 2019 wines are very balanced between the phenolic component, acidity and alcohol. Great aging potential. Certainly one of the best vintages of Bolgheri, like iconic vintages such as 1998, 2008, 2015.

2019 Bolgheri vintage star rating: ✭✭✭✭✭

2018 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Andamento climatico:

The 2018 growing season saw abundant rains between spring and summer, making for a challenging start. Those frequent rains and humidity alternating with sunny days and warm temperatures have created the ideal conditions for fungal diseases. Many winemakers of the Bolgheri appellation have dedicated hours of extra manpower to manage this situation by taking care of the foliage and eliminating the weeds.

Vineyard sites with looser soils and more stones have proven to be well-draining and have given some of the best results. The season turned out to be noticeably warmer and drier in the last few weeks before harvest, which accelerated ripening. However, the harvest came a little later in 2018 due to delays at the beginning of the year.

At Tenuta San Guido the grapes were harvested two weeks later than the average and the excellent quality of the fruit was never compromised. To sum up, 2018 began as a cool vintage but ended as a hot year, and even if it is not one of Bolgheri’s best vintages, it was certainly great.

Bolgheri of the 2018 vintage:

This is Bolgheri da textbook, a wine with an infinitely complex bouquet, elegant phenolic weight, balanced acidity, moderate alcohol content (with a real value of 13.35% and 13.5% reported on the label) and a great aging potential in cellar.

2017 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Climate trend:

Climatic trend and characteristics of the vintage: Autumn and the first part of winter were characterized by low temperatures, conditioned by north winds and average rainfall. The bizarre climate of early spring, with temperatures that were already well above average at the end of March, affected the good progress of flowering but also of fruit set, giving rise to smaller clusters and less berries.

The summer continued with sunny days, hot temperatures and no rain until the end of July.

The rains that fell at the most crucial moment of this action also allowed the berries to increase by
weight by diluting the concentration of sugars (glucose and fructose) while maintaining the good supply of polyphenols in perfect balance.

The alternation of night and day temperatures occurring from mid-August to the end of September favored the development of primary and secondary aromas, and also determined the increase in acidity which was truly essential to give freshness and elegance to musts.

Bolgheri of the 2017 vintage:

Wines with a good alcoholic component, in some cases slightly in evidence, tannins still in progress slightly below expectations for the average of Bolgheri wines, moderate acidity. The wines of the 2017 vintage of Bolgherisi confirm good wines despite the criticalities of the hot vintage, however the aging potential of these wines does not seem to be the best.

2016 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Climate trend:

A year worthy of praise 2016, perhaps even better for some than the exceptional 2015. Autumn was characterized by an unusually warm and dry climate, except for a few rare showers. The real winter arrived at the end of November with cold temperatures that remained low both day and night, until the whole month of January. February, on the other hand, is
It was a month that was mostly humid and with a slight rise in temperatures.

At the beginning of April, the sharp rise in temperatures led to an anticipation of the budding of the vines, but the real arrival of summer was in the second half of June, when rains and a rather humid climate gave way to beautiful sunny days and at summer temperatures on seasonal levels without excesses.

In August, the cool night breezes, conditioned by the sea, accentuated the development of aromas and guaranteed the freshness and fragrance of the grapes which gradually ripened in a harvest that lasted until the first ten days of October.

Bolgheri of the 2016 vintage:

Great extraction in terms of color and anthocyanin structure, combined with an extraordinary aromatic component
and elegance and finesse of tannins are the distinctive note of this Bolgheri vintage. A memorable Bolgheri vintage, certainly among the best vintages of Bolgheri

2015 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Climate trend:

The 2015 vintage of Bolgheri was characterized by an overall mild winter, with temperatures below the seasonal average in the months of January and February and abundant rains, the vegetative start began in the second week of April with the arrival of mild temperatures and days of Sun.

The rains have favored a more rapid vegetation of the plants and equally made suitable the water reserve of the soils. June and the first half of July were characterized by temperatures above the seasonal average but, from the end of July, they dropped back to normal.

This is also thanks to some rainfall that brought fresh air to the benefit of the vineyards and excellent grape production. The good temperature range between night and day, which occurred throughout the month of August, guaranteed perfect phenolic ripeness of the grapes and great overall quality.

Bolgheri of the 2015 vintage:

Deep wines endowed with great extract, lively and intense colors and vigorous tannins of good maturity. Important alcoholic components, in rare cases also in evidence and clear, intense and penetrating fruity aromas. An exceptional Bolgheri vintage: great character and excellent evolutionary potential, deservedly among the best vintages of Bolgheri

2015 Bolgheri vintage star rating: ✭✭✭✭✭

2014 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri vintage 2014 climate trend:

Bolgheri’s 2014 vintage was a rather unusual vintage, as in the rest of Italy. The winter was quite mild, while the spring started late with a rather rigid month of April compared to the seasonal norm and this contributed to delaying the vegetative start. In May, the vegetation started thanks to the arrival of warmer temperatures.

Summer was characterized by sunny days and average temperatures until the beginning of July. From the first ten days of July, some perturbations have occurred that have led to rainfall and lower temperatures, decreeing the end of summer as early as mid-August. Excellent results in terms of ripening of the grapes achieved with the cabernets which have allowed the production of healthy, crunchy grapes with excellent total acidity and PH.

Bolgheri wines of the 2014 vintage:

The trend of the 2014 vintage of Bolgheri is very evident in the wine for the alcohol content but above all for the spicy notes and the great aromatic component that makes the wine pleasant even at a young age. Perhaps not among the best vintages of Bolgheri due to the critical climatic trend that has created wines that are not always balanced with some roughness and less suitable for aging.

Bolgheri vintage 2014 evaluation: ✭✭✭

2013 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2013 vintage climate trend:

Bolgheri’s 2013 vintage was a fantastic year in every respect. After a fairly mild early winter, from the end of November until the end of January the temperatures became rigid with very cold and rainy days. Spring started late and some frosts in April held back budding and also created natural conditions with less production. Since May, temperatures have tended to rise again but gradually and with days alternating with light rains.

From early June, summer began with high temperatures but in seasonal averages and sporadic rains which occurred at the most appropriate times. The continuation of the summer until the harvest occurred in optimal conditions with a good temperature range between day and night, favoring the aromatic extraction of the Cabernets.

Bolgheri wines of the 2013 vintage:

Among the best vintages of Bolgheri: the wines sensationally reconcile structure and finesse. Good acidity that gives it freshness and wines with interesting aging potential. An excellent good vintage but with not always homogeneous results.

2012 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2012 vintage climate trend::

The climatic trend of 2012. Autumn and Winter quite rigid and prolonged, with repeated snowfalls in January, very rare in the area, is quite particular. Spring started a little late. From the second week of May, temperatures tended to rise, accelerating the arrival of summer. In mid-June some rains made miraculous for the plants and for the water reserves of the soil.

July and August were very hot months, with temperatures above the seasonal averages. But thanks to the particular position of the land where the company’s vineyards are located, deep, fresh, located in the hills and surrounded by the Mediterranean scrub, they were absolutely not affected by the heat peaks which, especially in August, became more pronounced.

Bolgheri wines of the 2012 vintage:

Fully among the best vintages of Bolgheri, opulent and Mediterranean wines with an important alcoholic component, great extract and interesting aging potential.

2012 Bolgheri vintage rating: ✭✭✭✭

2011 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri vintage 2011 climate trend:
The climatic trend of Bolgheri’s 2011 vintage was excellent. It can be counted among the best vintages of 2000. The winter was harsh with temperatures below the seasonal average, especially in the months of November and January. Spring, on the other hand, began early with mild temperatures and excellent water supply with gradual rains not accompanied by wind. These climatic conditions have favored an excellent vegetative development of the vineyards.

Summer 2011 was hot and long, but with temperatures that were always within the seasonal averages, with the exception of mid-July when the heat became more intense. Fortunately, the temperature range between night and day, favored by the proximity to the sea, prevented the onset of situations of water stress in the plants and phenomena of over-ripening of the grapes.

Bolgheri of the 2011 vintage:

Among the best vintages of Bolgheri for finesse and balance. Good extract and alcoholic components but also lively acidity that gives balance.

2011 Bolgheri vintage rating: ✭✭✭✭

2010 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2010 vintage climate trend:

Bolgheri’s 2010 vintage was characterized by a long and harsh winter and a rainy and cool spring. The winter was very cold and this allowed the vegetative phases of the vine to be blocked. In mid-March there was a heavy snowfall and spring also proved colder than usual with average temperatures below the seasonal average and with abundant rains until May.

From the first ten days of June, temperatures aligned with the seasonal average combined with large temperature variations between day and night which favored the development of perfumes. The correct development of the plants was favored by a very hot and sunny July and by the total absence of rain.

Bolgheri wines of the 2010 vintage:

Certainly among the best vintages of Bolgheri: wines of important concentration and alcohol content, slightly rustic tannins, complexity, olfactory finesse and sensational aging potential.

Vintage 2010 Bolgheri evaluation: ✭✭✭✭

2009 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2009 vintage climate trend:
The climatic trend developed optimally throughout the year. Very low temperatures were recorded between late autumn and early winter which favored the vegetative stop of the plants. From mid-winter until spring
late in the day, the rainfalls were quite persistent, combined with temperatures slightly below the seasonal averages.

The summer seasonal course was instead optimal, with great sunshine and temperatures above the seasonal averages. From the end of July to the end of August, temperatures were warmer than average but the good water supply of the land, thanks also to the accumulation of autumn and winter rains, did not result in cases of water stress. The temperature range between night and day is also excellent, which ensured excellent phenolic ripening of the grapes.

Bolgheri wines of the 2009 vintage:

The 2009 vintage is among the best vintages of Bolgheri for its ability to reconcile concentration and freshness. Soft and enveloping mouth, notes played on red fruits and balsamic and aromatic herbs nuances.

2008 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2008 vintage climate trend:

The 2008 vintage in relation to Bolgheri was characterized by a fairly mild winter with little rain except for some sporadic precipitation during the month of January; temperatures dropped around mid-March and remained below the seasonal average for about three weeks. The spring was very sunny there were frequent rains and a significant drop in temperature.

This has led to a poor allegation with few clusters for each plant and overall to a lower production, about 20% less than the norm. The north wind that characterized the second half of September and caused a consequent lowering of temperatures, led, in the case of later varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, to a further lengthening of the ripening cycle and a gain in both aromatic potential and structural, maintaining a fresh and vibrant acidity.

Bolgheri wines of the 2008 vintage:

A vintage with very mature, fine and well-defined tannins, great freshness, verticality, olfactory clarity and general balance.

Vintage 2008 Bolgheri evaluation: ✭✭✭✭✭

2007 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2007 vintage climate trend:
The 2007 season had a very mild winter with lower than normal rainfall, which caused an early bud break of about 10 days compared to the average. Mild spring with important water supply. The summer months were hot and dry but the temperatures were normal, with somewhat cool days, which anticipated a perfect ripening of the grapes.

Bolgheri wines of the 2007 vintage:

One of the best vintages of Bolgheri for depth and volume: a warm year of good concentration and olfactory intensity with penetrating fruity notes, acidity and slightly subdued tannins.

2007 Bolgheri vintage evaluation: ✭✭✭✭

2006 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2006 vintage climate trend:
Cold and rainy winter months caused budding delays that the warm spring days were unable to recover. This phenomenon due to thermal excursions induced an irregular flowering which lasted for a long time
time, thus bringing full bloom in the first week of June. The usual vigor of the shoots accompanied a good productivity that even in the youngest vineyards was artfully regulated by a thinning of the bunches of modest entity,
synonymous with vegetative-productive balance.

The summer, with almost no rain, was fortunately accompanied by never excessive temperatures and this trend allowed the vines to develop a good aromatic potential. The grapes were thus presented at the beginning of the harvest in a perfect way: concentrated and homogeneously ripe.

Bolgheri wines of the 2006 vintage:

An exceptional vintage of Bolgheri characterized by excellent polyphenolic concentrations, important alcoholic components assisted by acidity of backbone and complex and elegant aromatic profiles. Deservedly among the best vintages of Bolgheri.

2006 Bolgheri vintage evaluation: ✭✭✭✭

2005 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2005 vintage climate trend:
The accumulation of rain during the winter allowed for regular germination and, therefore, normal flowering. The grapes did not suffer in terms of fruit set.

The seasonal progression from spring to summer was cool and breezy, without the peaks of scorching heat reached during the months of July and August. This phenomenon has increased the vegetative form of the vine plants. Also for this reason, the cultivation operations have been intensified on the green (tipping-pinching) and the vegetative arrest has been postponed.

Bolgheri wines of the 2005 vintage:

The Bolgheri of the 2005 vintage are austere on the nose but with a good lively freshness on the palate and less concentration. A good year, among the best vintages of Bolgheri.

2005 Bolgheri vintage evaluation: ✭✭✭✭✭

2004 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2004 vintage climate trend:
The winter of 2004 had sufficient rains and never excessive temperatures and the spring was sunny and dotted with short thunderstorms. Sprouting occurred between March 30th and April 10th. At flowering, a high fertility of the buds (dates
the high temperatures of the previous year).

The potentially high yield was kept within the desired quality limits by a decisive and repeated thinning of the grapes. Summer was characterized by a mild start with moderate temperatures and a sunny and very hot month of August. These ideal conditions have allowed a homogeneous and regular physiological development of all varieties.

Bolgheri wines of the 2004 vintage:

Wines of great maturity, intense colors, richness and tannic maturity with important alcoholic components with less lively acidity. Deservedly among the best vintages of Bolgheri

Vintage 2004 Bolgheri evaluation: ✭✭✭✭

2003 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2003 vintage climate trend:

The 2003 vintage of Bolgheri was characterized by rains and temperatures in the seasonal average, thus favoring excellent water retention of the soil in the summer months. The summer was particularly hot, even if the temperatures never touched, thanks to the proximity of the sea, those extremely high values found in the interior of Tuscany. The climate therefore remained extremely dry and warm until the harvest.

Bolgheri wines from the 2003 vintage:

A vintage perhaps not exceptional, controversial with many conflicting opinions: The 2003 vintage in Bolgheri was hot, with large alcoholic components in evidence and more tired acidity that compromised the balance and overall elegance of the wines. Probably not among the best vintages of Bolgheri.

2003 Bolgheri vintage evaluation: ✭✭✭

2002 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2002 vintage climate trend:
The climatic trend of the 2002 vintage was somewhat fluctuating; during the spring the climate remained in the seasonal norm while in the months of June and July the rainfall was above the seasonal average. From the early days
in September and throughout the harvest, the weather returned to being sunny, thus favoring a complete ripening of the grapes

Bolgheri wines of the 2002 vintage:

A year of minor extracted for Bolgheri. The wines are more vertical, with slightly contracted tannins but good acidity, a good vintage but not among the best vintages of Bolgheri.

2001 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2001 vintage climate trend:

The 2001 vintage of Bolgheri was particularly favorable, with very little rainfall
during the summer. Temperatures, very similar to those of 2000, remained at
above the seasonal average thus favoring a complete and early ripening
of grapes.

Bolgheri wines of the 2001 vintage:

A fairly excellent vintage, wines with good tannic-acid balance and olfactory finesse. Overall an exceptional vintage, among the best vintages of Bolgheri.

2000 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 2000 vintage climate trend:
The seasonal trend was particularly favorable with almost no rainfall from the first months of July to the last week of September. Temperatures remained in the seasonal average thanks also to the proximity of the sea,
thus favoring a constant maturation slightly earlier than the average. The harvest began during the first ten days of September and lasted for about three weeks.

Bolgheri wines from the 2000 vintage:

A Bolgheri vintage with important critical issues. Wines with less concentration and maturity of polyphenols and less lively acidity, with less clear and defined fruity aromas. Vintage 2000 is probably not one of Bolgheri’s best vintages.

1999– Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 1999 vintage climate trend:
An uneven vintage in Tuscany, initially underestimated. In the Bolgheri area, cold winter, excellent climate in spring, hot summer without precipitation.

Bolgheri wines of the 1999 vintage:

1998– Migliori Annate Bolgheri

Bolgheri 1998 vintage climate trend:

The seasonal trend was particularly favorable with very low rainfall from May 15 to the last week of September and high temperatures already in July (31 °) which continued into the following month.

Contrary to the previous year, therefore no rain in August (30 mm. In 97). Harvest: The grapes were already very ripe in early September when the harvest began: this lasted for 3 weeks without interruption.

Certainly one of the best vintages of Bolgheri

1997– Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 1997 vintage climate trend:
Late winter and early spring were temperate and very dry. This aided early budding (about 10 days early). In April, temperatures dropped, blocking the growth of shoots.

The summer period was hot and sunny, continuing throughout the month of September and for the entire duration of the harvest, allowing us to harvest grapes with a high sugar concentration and very healthy. Harvest 97 was poorer than expected but it is an exceptional vintage, probably more than 1990.

Harvest: Excellent harvest under every aspect: climatic trend during harvest, health
of the grapes, perfect ripeness and balanced quantity on the plant, have favored one
interesting thickness of the peel and an excellent sugary juice.

Evaluation of the vintage 1997 Bolgheri: ✭✭✭✭✭

1996– Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 1999 vintage climate trend:
The climatic trend in 1996 in Italy was not exactly favorable. This, however, with some exceptions as it was in the stretch of the Tuscan coast. In Bolgheri, in particular, the unfavorable climatic conditions that characterized the late summer period in many areas of Italy did not occur.

The 1996 vintage of Bolgheri was characterized by a fairly mild winter, with normal rainfall, guaranteeing a good water supply for the land. Spring started early with days of mild and sunny temperatures, anticipating the budding of the vines.

A sudden drop in temperature in the period of the end of April caused a natural thinning of the production. The first summer period was characterized by temperatures above the seasonal average, while the second period was instead influenced by lower temperatures and with occasional rainfall which lengthened the ripening period, benefiting from an optimal phenolic ripening guaranteed also thanks to the thermal excursion between night and day.

The harvest period, on the other hand, took place regularly with no rain and cool and well-ventilated days which guaranteed the harvest of excellent grapes in every respect: health of the bunches,
almost high sugar richness, excellent polyphenolic kit for quality and quantity of sweet tannins.

Perhaps not among the best Bolgheri vintages, but certainly a decent vintage.

Evaluation of the 1996 Bolgheri vintage: ✭✭✭✭

1995 – Best Vintages Bolgheri

Bolgheri 1995 vintage climate trend:
The seasonal trend of the 1995 Bolgheri vintage was irregular with low summer temperatures and frequent rains, causing a delay in ripening of about 10 days, and the maintenance of a natural acidity higher than normal with positive consequences on the primary aromatic heritage.

Harvest: The ripening of the grapes in 1995 was good. However, while not having reached
almost ‘overripe’, the beginning of the 1995 harvest was quite protracted: 18 September, starting in the Aianova vineyard. A hot and a little windy day, that of September 18th: the sky is a little variable, but far from the rain. The harvested grapes
it was rich in color and had a medium to good sugar content, with relatively low total acidity.

With full rights one of the best vintages of Bolgheri.
