Morellino di Scansano

Morellino di Scansano is a DOCG wine from Tuscany produced in the Scansano area and in part of the Grosseto province. Morellino di Scansano was recognized DOC in 1978 and has been able to boast the prestigious DOCG since 2007.

The disciplinary of Morellino di Scansano requires that it be produced from Sangiovese grapes (minimum 85%), to which complementary vines can be added, often including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah or the native Ciliegiolo and Colorino.

The best Morellino di Scansano are divided into two types: Vintage; fresher and more immediate, which enters the market from the spring following the harvest, and Riserva; more complex and elegant, which must undergo aging for at least two years, one of which in wood.

The production of wine in Maremma boasts a long history dating back to Etruscan and Roman times, as documented also in the Archaeological Museum of the vine and wine of Scansano.
