Bocale

(MONTEFALCO – PERUGIA) Bocale, in Umbria, produces excellent wines, such as Sagratino di Montefalco, Rosso di Montefalco, as well as an excellent white based on Trebbiano Spoletino.

Bocale’s History and Philosophy

Montefalco , despite being a relatively little known denomination until the end of the last century and the first years of the new millennium, became known through the work of some of the largest estates, those with a certain production capacity and the capital that allowed it to invest in marketing and public relations. And this is reflected in the statistics that define the production area: from the few hectares to the previous vineyard, the area has grown to the current 600 hectares only for the two main denominations of red ( Sagratino di Montefalco and Rosso di Montefalco ), to which must be added the white wines based mainly on the local grape, Grechetto , and also the various non-denominations of reds and whites.

Even small properties, however, helped to write this story, and one of the indisputable leaders is the Bocale estate of the Valentini family , who arrived in Montefalco in the 1920s and immediately dedicated himself to what, at the time, was the only activity profitable for the town, agriculture. A fact that is reflected in the name of the estate: “Boccale” which was used to measure both wine and oil, the two main harvests of this part, and not only this part, of Umbria .

The decisive step for the Valentini family came in 2002, when the estate was founded as a commercial activity and began to bottle the wines produced from its own grapes. The hectares are limited, something like 5.5 hectares of vineyards, but almost a century of work has naturally given the family a full knowledge of how to bring the harvest to complete maturity.

The wines of Bocale

The work in the cellar has undoubtedly benefited from the advice and professional skills of their winemaker consultant, Emiliano Falsini , who, despite being young, has worked for years in the Montefalco area and is rightly considered one of the most talented interpreters of these grapes. Something that is reflected in the elegance that leads to the powerful Bocale wines. And in the new efforts, quite interesting in fact, a white wine based on the Trebbiano Spoletino grape , something new, but already very promising.
