Caiarossa, a splendid Tuscan company, practices biodynamic viticulture. Among its best wines we find the Aria di Caiarossa and Pergolaia red wine, homage to the house, and a tasty white wine, Vermentino and Viognier.
Caiarossa’s History and Philosophy
Caiarossa is a rather unusual estate in many ways. To start: Riparbella, where it is located, along the Tuscan coast, is an area where some viticulture has always been practiced, essentially for local and family consumption. But nothing serious and ambitious had ever existed or even been contemplated. But things began to change with the arrival of a Belgian rock music producer and concert organizer, a wine lover, who planted a variety of grapes apparently already known both in Tuscany and France and built a cellar almost entirely in concrete and wood, based on the principles of geodynamic architecture and Feng Shui.
Practical issues, however, were dealt with less successfully, but, fortunately, a German entrepreneur, Eric Albada Jelgersma , owner of several important châteaux in Bordeaux , came to the rescue and turned the company on its current path. A path made of very interesting wines, like few others in Tuscany . Wines that combine French elegance with Mediterranean warmth and which, given the many grape varieties in the vineyards, offer aromas and flavors of a truly distinctive character. The house practices a strict and rigorous biodynamic viticulture, but at a highly professional level, it is not a hippie-managed company at all.
The wines of Caiarossa
The emblem of the house, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangiovese, Petit Verlot and Alicante , has no equal in Tuscany , but a classic long fermentation takes place in cement and oak tanks of sizes and capacities different, and then another 11-20 months of aging in small oak barrels (only 30% new). The treatment is classic, but unique in the combination of sensations that come together to create a deep and complex wine. Pergolaia is Sangiovese, homage to the house, and given the delicate character of the variety, it is given a slightly shorter fermentation and is aged for approximately one year in larger 500 liter barrels, all previously used. Aria di Caiarossa, with a truly Bordeaux approach , is the second wine and uses only French grapes. A tasty white wine, Vermentino and Viognier , and a luxurious dessert wine from the rare Petit Manseng grape , Oro di Caiarossa , completes the range.
