(VENOSA – POTENZA) At the beginning, 27 producers created the Cantina Sociale di Venosa. To date we have over 400 members who produce an excellent Aglianico del Vulture and a wide selection of typical Basilicata wines.

Cantina di Venosa’s History and Philosophy

We are in the Lucanian city of Venosa , where the great Latin poet Horace was born , located in the area dominated by the profile of the Monte Vulture massif , in the province of Potenza, in northern Basilicata .

The lava nature of the soil and subsoil makes this sandstone particularly rich in minerals, which allows excellent viticulture. The excellent wine of the area is the Aglianico del Vulture , its DOC was recognized in 1971, also widespread in the Avellino and Benevento areas, but the lava matrix of the Vulture lands gives it a particular body and organoleptic characteristics, which it distinguishes it from the other types of Aglianico. It is grown up to 800 meters above sea level, although the optimal conditions are between 200 and 600 meters. Perfect conditions, which have characterized this area for millennia for the production of one of the most famous southern wines in the world.

Venosa welcomes one of the most important and renowned wineries of the South the Cantina Sociale di Venosa, which was founded in 1957 thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit and willpower of a group of 27 producers, who acted as a driving force for the others who gradually they were added, until today there are about 400 members. A reality at the base of the local economy, thanks to the members, to the approximately 800 hectares of vineyards, most of them in the Municipality of Venosa, which produce more than 35,000 hectoliters and more than 800,000 bottles a year, in fact this company-cooperative produces alone, about 70% of all Aglianico bottles in the region. In the cellar the plants are at the forefront and thanks to an ancient tradition, new techniques and careful management of the members for all phases from the vineyard to the cellar, allow Aglianico to mature in French and Slavonian oak barrels, which they form the basis for obtaining that superior quality for which this wine excels.

The line is well made with its wide selection of wines, to underline the Carato Venusio Aglianico del Vulture, a nectar in the true sense of the word with its ruby ​​red, energetic, soft, with a gentle aroma and dry flavor, but the company in addition to transforming mainly Aglianico del Vulture grapes, also has an excellent production of a delicate white Malvasia and Moscato. These are the labels of the range: Gesualdo Aglianico del Vulture DOP, Carato Venusio Aglianico del Vulture DOP, Terre di Orazio Aglianico del Vulture DOP, Terre di Orazio Dry Muscat, Terre di Orazio Rosè, Vignali Aglianico del Vulture DOP, Vignali Igp Rosso, Vignali Igp Bianco, Vignali Sweet Sparkling Moscato, Vignali Sweet Red Sparkling Wine, Vignali Spumante Brut. And finally also a Grappa di Aglianico del Vulture and a Grappa di Moscato.
