Cantina Merano

Cantina Merano in Trentino Alto Adige

(MARLENGO – BOLZANO) Cantina Merano produces wines from vineyards located around Merano and in the Venosta Valley. The wines are divided into the Vigneti and Rarità, Val Venosta, Graf and Festival lines.

History and Terroir of Cantina Merano

The Merano Winery is a small large social winery that has been able to bring to the fore the enological culture of an area, but even more: celebrate the work of a series of producer-members, who, with a unique commitment, confer grapes high quality, to make first-rate wines.

The trend has been on the rise since the merger between the Merano Winery (established in 1952) and the Burggräfler Winery (built in 1901), with the idea of expressing the terroir’s extraordinary capabilities to the full. The Merano winery is favored by an ideal microclimate, with an altitude ranging from 300 to 900 m a.s.l. and a climate that sees the Mediterranean heat coexist with the freshness and temperature changes typical of an alpine area. These are essential prerequisites for the creation of wines with a great identity, endowed with elegance and aromatic finesse but also great structure and character.

To date, the Merano Winery has approximately 250 hectares distributed between over 360 members and has recently been enlarged and renovated by the architect Werner Tscholl, who has maintained its historic structure. Wine lovers can enter directly into the new panoramic wine shop, where you can enjoy a 360 degree view of the Merano amphitheater and part of the vineyards of the Val d’Adige.

The range of wines produced, with the oenological advice of Stefan Kapfinger, is very wide, being able to range on the vines that are the true vocation of this land. However, the excellent interpretations of Pinot Blanc stand out for interest. The grapes vinified in the cellar boast the most modern methods, while in the vineyard a rigorous respect for the environment is observed, thanks to non-invasive criteria, to keep the vine healthy and in perfect efficiency.

Cantina Merano Wines

The production of wines from the Merano Cellar includes native South Tyrolean and international vines and is divided into the Vigneti and Rarità lines, which include wines with prolonged aging, produced from the most selected grapes in the most suitable years. The Val Venosta line, with a strong sapid mineral character, or the Graf line (Conte) elegant wines made from selected vineyards with low yields, and finally the Festival line, which expresses typical wines of greater immediacy and good gastronomic versatility.

Of particular interest is the Alto Adige Pinot Bianco V Years Riserva wine, which is refined for 5 years on fine yeasts, and competes fully with the best whites of this region. But also the excellent Lagrein Riserva Segen, Lagrein in purity, of a very intense garnet red color, which boasts a wide olfactory range of licorice, red fruits and roasting, with an engaging palate and velvety tannins. Not to forget the Alto Adige Sauvignon Blanc Mervin, a great varietal interpretation with a rich and expansive palate. Finally, the enveloping Moscato Giallo Passito Sissi, obtained from Moscato Giallo and a small part of Gewürztraminer, with a classic straw yellow color with golden reflections that spreads dried fruit, flowers and spices on the nose. But the wines of the Merano Winery are many and all to be discovered in their uniqueness.
