Cantina Tudernum

Cantina Tudernum

(TODI – PERUGIA) Over 100 members, over 200 hectares of vineyards, over 250 thousand bottles. These are the numbers of the Cantina Tudernum wine cooperative in Todi. The wines produced are Grechetto Superiore Colle Nobile, Todi Rossi Superiore Rojano and Montefalco Sagratino.

Cantina Tudernum’s History and Philosophy

The Umbria region of central Italy is famous for its lovely small and medium-sized cities – Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Gubbio, Spello, Orvieto, and many others – which every year draw throngs of appreciative visitors. Todi must also be numbered among these and offers the usual attractions – art, landscape, monuments, and cuisine – which have long made Italy a magnet for tourists seeking not merely relaxation but also the finer things in life.

In Todi they can find such sites as the late-medieval Palazzo del Priori and Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the magnificent Bramante-designed Tempio di Santa Maria della Consolazione, and a series of imposing palaces while sampling the black truffle-based dishes of the succulent local cuisine. Wine is also part of the picture, but for most of its history the city has been in the shadow of nearby Orvieto, whose white wine production has been known for centuries and constitutes the largest – by an ample margin –  controlled appellation in all of Umbria.

But the shadow has lifted: in recent years a series of small and medium-sized wineries have demonstrated with their production that the vineyards of the countryside around Todi can provide high class grapes for equally interesting wines. In the forefront of this Renaissance, however, has been Tudernum, the cooperative winery of the township, an important force with its various hundreds of members and its 500 acres of vineyards.

The wines of Cantina Tudernum

The winemaking, under the charge of the team of oenologists, assisted by talented consultant Emiliano Falsini, has been highly capable and has supplied a series of well made and characterful offerings which have quickly won a place on the market. Important numbers – 250 thousand bottles – of both Grechetto and Sangiovese – are produced and they are flanked by a group of superior selections which convincingly demonstrate that the area can complete with the best: the Grechetto Superiore Colle Nobile and the Todi Rossi Superiore Rojano. And, best of all, the outstanding red wine made from the grapes of the neighboring township of Montefalco, the rich and potent Montefalco Sagrantino.
