Cantine Fontezoppa

Cantine Fontezoppa

(CIVITANOVA MARCHE – MACERATA) The young winery Cantine Fontezoppa in Civitanova Marche produces excellent wines expressions of the Marche region. Among the red wines the Morò Serrapetrona DOC wine stands out.

Fontezoppa’s History and Philosophy

Cantine Fontezoppa is a Marche company located in central Italy on the Adriatic coast in the province of Macerata between Civitanova Marche and very close to Civitanova Alta, the latter being an ancient 14th century village, built on a hill, enclosed within the walls of a medieval castle.

In fact, this young company, which takes its name from the ancient source of water that gushed out where the rows of vineyards are chasing each other, was born thanks to the acquisition of the land in Civitanova Alta, in the late 1990s, by the family Luzi. In a short time, in addition to the considerable size, the cellar has reached a certain charisma in the production of wines, which reflect tradition and the territory.

The property owns about 37 hectares of land with about 17 hectares of vineyards in Civitanova in Contrada San Domenico at an altitude of 150 meters a stone’s throw from the sea, predominantly clayey soils suited to the cultivation of red berried grapes, while in Contrada Asola, the vines are dedicated to the cultivation of white berried grapes. The remaining 20 hectares of property are located in the historic Cantine di Serrapetrona, Claudi and Fabrini, at an altitude of about 450 meters, on soils rich in sandstone and marble formations, the ideal habitat for Vernaccia, Pinot Nero and Incontro Bruni. The cultivations of the grapes are, as it is well understood, of the indigenous ones, but some international grapes are also cultivated and on the whole they are: Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet, Lacrima, Maceratino, Incontro Bruni, Pecorino and Vernaccia Nera.

The wines of Fontezoppa

The work in the cellar is followed by Giovanni Basso, the company offers a broad line that denotes the solidity of the cellar and ranges from whites to reds, to excellent sparkling wines. Making Pinot Noir wine is not easy, it is a complex grape, with an early ripening and very sensitive to the terroir, in fact in too hot climates, it ripens quickly and does not fully develop the aromas that its skins can release. But the San Marone is a splendid result, among the reds the Vernaccia Nera is almost the master, like the red Falcotto of Serrapetrona and the Morò, a wine that contains the smells and flavors of its territory, while a curiosity should be emphasized for l’Annibal Vino Spumante Brut Rosè, which in addition to surprising as sparkling wines, bears the name of the illustrious local character Annibal Dear important Italian writer, whose home is also present in the village of Civitanova Alta. The whites are no different, like the intense, fresh and playful Colli Maceratesi Ribona, but all these wines have a strong character, and I express well the painstaking work done in the vineyard and in the cellar.
