Castello del Terriccio

Degustazioni da Castello del Terriccio|Tenuta Castello del Terriccio a Castellina Marittima||

Exceptional wines are produced on this estate, such as Tassinaia, a Bordeaux, Lupicaia blend, from Cabernet Sauvigno and Petit Verdot grapes, and Castello di Terriccio, Syrah and Petit Verdot blend. Thanks to the commitment of Rossi di Medelana and Carlo Ferrini this winery is famous all over the world.

From a watchtower to a modern and prestigious wine producing estate, this may seem like the usual story of many of the now famous houses. But one of the first examples, which has lost none of the prestige that has characterized it from the beginning, is Castello di Terriccio in Tuscany . A truly extensive property, which has only recently started producing wine; when Gian Annibale Rossi of Medelana Ferri Serafini arrived in Maremma in 1975 to take care of the business, he found over 60 half-sized families and little of modern, professional and, above all, profitable agriculture. In addition, Castellina Marittima, where Castello di Terriccio stands, did not have a true viticulture tradition, in fact the Maremma until the end of the Second World War was an area intended essentially for grazing cattle and sparsely populated.

But Rossi from Medelana was not an easy man to be discouraged; his family arrived in Italy with the Holy Roman Empire in the mid-13th century and has always been involved in agriculture in the various properties he owned. And although his life had previously been dedicated to horse riding, he devoted himself to agriculture as if it were a natural talent. Fortunately for him, there were examples easily available, just to the north, in what would become the denomination of Bolgheri, fantastic red wines that were already sold on Italian and international markets, and their reputation was growing by leaps and bounds. All that was needed was the human element, in particular its own viticultural and oenological knowledge and experience, to channel the natural resources that were available.

These were offered by Carlo Ferrini , the agronomist consultant and wine producer who had worked on the estate from the beginning. It was he who planned and planted the vineyards and produced the first, and immediately acclaimed, wines, which gave fame to Castello di Terriccio. There are various wines in the line, but three have regularly been extraordinary hits: Tassinaia , the regular, but well-made blend of Bordeaux ; Lupicaia , Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot , a wine of great character, personality and distinction; and Castello di Terriccio , an exceptional and unusually powerful blend of Syrah ,Petiot Verdot and other grapes.
