The history of Castello di Buttrio

cantina Castello di Buttrio

The Castle of Buttrio is located in the town of the same name in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Buttrio is a city of wine, known for the famous wines of its hills and where the winemaking tradition is centuries old. Right on the Pampinutta hill stands the Castle of Buttrio, managed by Alessandra Felluga, where the surrounding landscape is nothing short of breathtaking.

“Wine is tradition, but at the same time innovation, it must be honest towards the fruit and respect it, enhancing its sense of place. For me, these are the fundamental conditions for quality and uniqueness oenology “.

These are some of the words with which Alessandra Felluga expresses her idea of wine, a woman who belongs to the history of Friuli through her dynasty, but who has not prevented her from creating a new course in the history of the Fellugas. Independent and passionate, like the choice that moved her more than 10 years ago, with courage and absolute determination, in taking the reins, alone, of the Castle of Buttrio after her father Marco decided to buy the property in 1994.

The Terroir and the Philosophy of Castello di Buttrio wines

The 26 hectares of vineyards in the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC, represent a heritage of historic vineyards, not very productive, but with an extraordinary quality of grapes and aromatic concentration. The vines are placed on terraced land, with a complex composition and where the roots of the vine are well planted on the soil of the mother rock made up of Flysch.

The alternation of layers of marl and thin sheets of sandstone, in addition to the climate with its average annual temperature between 10 and 20 degrees centigrade, and an adequate exposure, create that ideal place to give life to wines of great character, freshness And flavor.

The work both in the vineyard and in the cellar is coordinated with great accuracy and with the utmost respect for the ecosystem, biodiversity and natural cycles, to the point that the grapes of each single parcel are vinified separately, to safeguard the absolute uniqueness of each vineyard.

Another essential aspect for the production of Castello di Buttrio is the idea of creating sincere wines, which become narrators of the territory of origin in its specific soil and climate and in the different vintages.

Native vines and the international classics, low yields in the vineyard, rigorous manual selection and minimal use of sulphites. These are essential prerequisites for not having to intervene with invasive corrections during the vinification phase, but to let the first quality raw material obtained from the work in the vineyard speak for itself.
