Castello di Spessa’s History and Philosophy

That of
Collio is a complex land, with its charming hills, tidy and timeless, where a wine is conceived that it is the most authentic expression of nature and men who produce it for centuries with passion. These lands are renowned for the production of excellent wines and one of the most representative centers of the famous DOC wine area of Collio is the Castello di Spessa, with its vineyards, which extend for 83 hectares and placed on the slopes on the border with Slovenia, in the province of Gorizia. The favorable climate enjoyed by the company vines is due to the protection that the Julian Prealps offer from the north and to the beneficial influence of the Adriatic Sea, which mitigates thermal excursions, while for the cultivation and the success of a good vinification in the cellar, are the soils, composed of a mixture of marl and sandstone stratified over the millennia (ponca) rich in salts and microelements , which gives wines, especially whites, great character, minerality, strength and longevity.

The history of this company is very ancient, if we have certain news of it since 1200, a castle that over time has seen illustrious personalities pass through it, including Giacomo Casanova, so much so that both a label, the Pinot Nero Casanova, was dedicated to him. a reserved area inside the castle, the Casanova conference room, as well as a “Giacomo Casanova Castello di Spessa” literary prize. The company is now a luxury wine-resort, where you can spend unforgettable holidays, and organize events, weddings, business meetings and tastings, as well as owning an impressive 18-hole golf course surrounded by vineyards. All this could have happened, thanks to the Friulian entrepreneur Loretto Pali, who made his fortune with the 1987 purchase of Castello di Spessa.

The fourteenth-century aging cellar represents the heart of the Castello di Spessa, and is the oldest in the Collio Goriziano. Divided over two levels, where the first level of medieval origin is used as a barrel cellar, while the second level, which is located about 18 meters deep, dating back to the Second World War, is used for Cru in the aging phase and for the excellent and renowned Grappa Riserva Conte Ludovico. Thanks to a scrupulous selection of the grapes and to the careful work, which from the vineyards is then continued in the cellar, under the supervision of the oenologist Enrico Paternoster, a well-curated line of the Conte di Spessa is created, which represents Made in excellence. Italy recognized in the world.

Among the wines we must certainly mention the company Crus, whose name derives from the noble families who have owned the castle over the years. Among the whites we can in fact range from the very velvety and floral Pinot Bianco Santarosa, to the fruity and savory Pinot Grigio Ramato Joy, to then move on to the intense Sauvignon Segrè, the autochthonous Ribolla Gialla Yellow Hills, the Friulan Rassauer mineral, or the Castello. powerful and elegant Bianco Collio Riserva San Serff. But also the red line is really interesting and of great identity, with Merlot Torriani, Pinot Nero Casanova and Rosso Collio Riserva San Serff. Very heterogeneous wines, but which all boast excellent structure, longevity and ample, rich and complex bouquets, all to be discovered. The owner Loretto Pali has also recently embarked on a really interesting collaboration with Simonit & Sirch, internationally renowned specialists, to raise the vines of the “Vigna dei 3 Pinot” (Pinot nero, Pinot grigio and Pinot bianco). An original cultivation technique has been adopted, typical of the areas most renowned for quality Pinots, such as Burgundy and Champagne. The plants are still young, with very low yields, around 35/40 quintals per hectare. The goal of this choice is to best interpret the varietal characteristics in the Collio micro-area to obtain great Pinots with excellent acidity, color stability and elegance.
