Castello Vicchiomaggio

Vicchiomaggio Castle boasts a documented history dating back to the year 975, when it belonged to the Lombard families and was known as Vicchio dei Lombardi.

Located on a hill overlooking the valley of the Greve river, the castle, whose origins date back to the 14th century, can also be proud of the various very distinguished guests who passed by there: first Leonardo da Vinci, who stayed in his rooms while he was busy in the portrait of Lisa Gherardini, owner of the nearby villa of Vignamaggio, destined to go down in history with the name of Mona Lisa, then the poet Francesco Redi, author of the famous ditirambo “Bacchus in Tuscany”.vicchiomaggio chianti famiglia

Leonardo da Vinci’s sketch depicting the castle and the place still exists. Vignamaggio, today, means wine, however, and mainly Chianti Classico. Owned for decades by the Anglo-Italian John Matta, whose family led a very well-established wine import business in the United Kingdom, the company cultivates over 33 hectares of vineyards. From these he obtains, in a normal vintage, over 150.00 bottles of wine of the denomination between the consolidated vintage, known as San Jacopo, and three different Reserves (La Prima, Agostino Petri and Gustavo Petri).

However, the international varieties are not neglected: in addition to an important Merlot aged in barrique, a niche wine of really high quality, there is a Sangiovese-Cabernet blend, Ripa delle Mandorle, which accounts for another 120,000 bottles. A substantial and varied line, in short, whose quality level, in the past two decades, has been steadily and constantly on the rise.
