Castelvecchio

(SAGRADO – GORIZIA) The Castelvecchio estate is located in Sagrado d’Isonzo, a wine resort that produces typical white and red wines from Friuli such as Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Malvasia, Refosco and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Castelvecchio’s History and Philosophy

The Friuli , the easternmost region of Italy, is somewhat decentralized way both geographically and historically. In the past, it was an extension of the Venetian Republic, which also dominated the east coast of the Balkan peninsula to the south, then became an Austrian possession with the Treaty of Vienna, which ended the Napoleonic wars and became part of Italy only in 1919 after the defeat Austrian in the First World War. Although not lacking in it, the region is relatively less endowed with monumental churches, patrician palaces and noble villas that scatter other parts from Veneto to the west.

An important exception, however, is the Castelvecchio estate in Sagrado d’Isonzo, where an imposing Renaissance villa surrounded by a beautiful garden and extensive forests, faces the sea, offering a series of breathtaking views over the whole territory. A place that has also become a restaurant and accommodation facility, where the owners also give the opportunity to celebrate weddings, banquets and receptions that attract an illustrious clientele. It is, however, not far from a series of towns that produce high quality wine, and viticulture constitutes a large part of the property’s activity. About 35 hectares of vineyards are cultivated and produce wines that are notably different from those of the producers of the nearby Isonzo denomination. Here we are in the Karst areaand, in addition, at a high altitude, the geology is significantly different from that of the Soča plain and its sand and gravel, in the lower west.

The wines of Castelvecchio

In Castelvecchio, the wines are planted on harder rock with a finer arable layer, the difference could not be felt more and is fully enhanced by the efforts of the consultant Gianni Menotti . Many wines are produced, all well made and with a varietal character, but particular attention is rightly given to Sauvignon , Gewürztraminer , Malvasia (especially the excellent Dileo selection ), Refosco and Cabernet Sauvignon . The last is a grape that rarely produces interesting results in Friuli, but in the case of the selection of the Dileo house, we are talking about a really important wine.
