(OFFIDA – ASCOLI PICENO) Excellent red wines and organic white wines are produced by the brothers Massimiliano and Walter Bartolomei in their Ciù Ciù company in the Piceno appellation, in the Marche region.

Ciù Ciù’s History and Philosophy

The city of Offida in the area south of the Marche ( Ascoli Piceno province ) is at the center of the most beautiful and prestigious part of the region’s denomination: Rosso Piceno . A blend of Montepulciano grapes , present in greater quantities ensuring body, fullness, roundness and sweetness, and Sangiovese, which plays an important role by providing aromas, freshness and finesse. This denomination has had an impressive development over the past fifteen years. And the best labels compete quietly with the finest offers from Central Italy. Montepulciano, in particular, boasts a considerable reputation in this part of the central Adriatic coast, as abundant as the production of Abruzzo in the south, but fragrant and refined at the same time, taking on a bit of the character of the Rosso Cornero wines from the north.

The Ciù Ciù winery of the brothers Massimiliano and Walter Bartolomei is the main protagonist of the Piceno denomination : 180 hectares of vineyards are not a small quantity and supply the grapes necessary for the wide range of wines that the house offers. Operations began in the early 1970s and growth – both in terms of quantity produced and in terms of general quality – was unquestionable and constant. The viticulture is organic and the work of the internal wine technician Tidei Davide in support of the two brothers is well felt.

The wines of Ciù Ciù

Although the area is best known for its red wines , white grapes are also significantly present, and the house produces significant quantities of both Passerina (200,000 bottles) and Pecorino (additional 100,000 bottles). Both are also offered in the sparkling version and have easily conquered the markets. But, predictably, it is the red wines that have attracted the most attention and praise and the choice is varied and not at all conventional: for example there is Esperanto which, as the name suggests, combines the place with the international, Montepulciano and Cabernet Sauvignon , really successful. More familiar is the Piceno Bacchus , 200,000 bottles that are a pleasure to drink, and the structure and concentration are brought to a completely different level with the Piceno Superiore Gotico , a powerful wine. Simply exceptional is Oppidum , 100% Montepulciano, the best bottle of the house, truly memorable.
