Collelceto

Collelceto

The Palazzeschi family has been producing red wines in Montalcino for many generations. The only grape grown is Sangiovese, from which Rosso di Montalcino Brunello di Montalcino , and  Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Elia are produced.

Collelceto’s History and Philosophy

Few Montalcino families can boast of having worked in this area for many generations, but one that certainly can do so is the Palazzeschi family , who bought his Collelceto property , located in the southeast corner of the town, in the early 20s Century. At that time, Montalcino, a rather isolated location south of Siena , was not known for its wines; the only bottler with a prominent name at the time was the historic Biondi Santi house.

The only wine that enjoyed a good reputation in the past was in fact a sweet Moscato-based offering, currently produced in homage to this past, Moscadello di Montalcino DOC . The local population, very contained, who lived in these areas concentrated their efforts on the cultivation of wheat and pastoralism, while the wine was intended for family consumption, as was the production of olive oil obtained from local olive groves. Only in the 1980s did a significant number of small landowners join Palazzeschi as producers of wine from their own grapes.

Collelceto , however, enjoys a number of natural benefits that are worth listing. The vineyards are planted on the classic soil of the town, a mixture of clay, sand and stone which, for generations, has shown a remarkable affinity with Sangiovese, the only grape grown by the Palazzesi. The altitudes of the vineyards, between 150 and 200 meters above sea level, are useful but not excessive, and their position on the slopes improves the exposure of the grapes to the sun’s rays. The geographical arrangement towards the south-west is an additional advantage for Sangiovese, of all the best late ripening varieties. The fresh breezes that blow from the Mediterranean Sea support the ripening process and are directed to the estate by passing through the inlet of the Ombrone river, another trump card, as the ventilation it brings helps prevent humidity and the formation of mold.

The wines of Collelceto

The careful work and the constant protection of the vineyards complete the picture, together with the inspired wine advice of Lorenzo Landi , one of the greatest professionals in Tuscany. The result is a series of wines, Rosso di Montalcino , Brunello di Montalcino , and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Elia , which have now found their place on the shelves and in the cellars of the best shops and restaurants in the world.
