Colmello di Grotta’s History and Philosophy

The Colmello di Grotta company is located in the Farra d’Isonzo countryside in the province of Gorizia. Here is also the Ethnographic Museum, “Museum of Documentation of the Peasant Civilization of Farra d’Isonzo”, which thanks to the Bennati family, who became the owner of the estate that belonged to the Strassoldo family in 1965 and that the cellar was founded at the hands of Luciana Bennati, ceded to the Municipality an entire building for the construction of the museum. The place is truly suggestive and seems to immerse itself in the typical nineteenth-century rural village, which maintains the original peasant characteristics.

The company is a thriving center for the numerous vineyards that cover its 15 hectares of vineyards on 21 company hectares. Thus lying the old characteristics of an agricultural landscape delimited by the Isonzo river and the Collio hills. And this is precisely the peculiarity of this company, which is divided between two major names, half DOP Collio and half DOP Isonzo del Friuli in a single body.

Colmello caveWines that come from vineyards of almost 40 years, at about 40-80 m asl, with native grapes such as: Friulano and Ribolla Gialla and the international Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot, the latter from historical clones imported from France in the beginning from the 60s. The soils are of different composition, in fact the vineyards located on the soils in the Isonzo part are calcareous-gravelly and give life to wines with structure, elegance and intensely perfumed. While the soils located in the Collio part are marly-sandstone, and enhance the complexity of the aromas and the structure bursting on the palate.

Today, Francesca Bortolotto Possati, Luciana’s daughter, is at the helm of the company, who has inherited the same maternal passion and foresight and has launched an important step: the Biological conversion phase, also making use of the advice of the oenologist Michele Bean.
