The History of Di Giovanna’s Wines

Sicily has always been a land of great wine traditions, the Cantina Di Giovanna is a historical example of this. Located in Sambuca di Sicilia, in the province of Agrigento at the foot of Monte Genuardo, it represents one of the oldest families of Sicilian wine.

Founded in 1860, when the great-grandfather Cristoforo built the cellar in the old beam of Fiuminello, it is currently managed by the brothers Gunther and Klaus, who represent the fourth generation and who carry on this wonderful reality with the same dedication.

Over time, Di Giovanna has become a hallmark. In an authentic way and with a meticulous search for quality, it can boast a high level wine production, following internal cultivation regulations aimed at the maximum result also thanks to the conversion to organic which took place in 1997.

Terroir of Di Giovanna wines

Di Giovanna’s wines are produced in five different vineyards located at different altitudes between Sambuca di Sicilia and Contessa Entellina. Thanks to the nature of the soil and subsoil, this limestone sandstone above and tuff below, particularly rich in mineral micronutrients, allows for quality viticulture.

In fact, in the territory of Sambuca di Sicilia, within the Monte Genuardo Reserve, at an altitude of 680-830 meters above sea level, there are 10 hectares of the Fiuminello vineyard and 4 of the San Giacomo estate surrounding the winemaking cellar. of the family.

On the hill estates in the Contessa Entellina area, instead, there are vineyards located at an altitude between 350 and 480 meters above sea level. and they are: Miccina which covers an area of 9 hectares, Gerbino which extends for 12 hectares and is the cradle of the production history of Di Giovanna’s wines, and finally Paradiso which with its 20 hectares is the largest vineyard.

Giovanna’s Philosophy of Wines

Respect for the environment and biodiversity is certainly a key element in the production of Giovanna’s wines, which in fact boasts a certified organic production since 1997.

Another essential aspect for the production of Di Giovanna’s wines is the idea of creating sincere wines, which become narrators of the territory of origin in its specific soil and climate and in the different vintages.

Average planting density, low yields in the vineyard, and rigorous manual selection adopted to bring only the best perfectly ripe grapes to the cellar. These are essential prerequisites for not having to intervene with invasive corrective agents during the vinification phase, but to let the first quality raw material obtained from the work in the vineyard speak for itself.

Wines of Di Giovanna

Di Giovanna’s wines are obtained from native vines such as Catarratto, Grillo, Nero d’Avola and Nerello Mascalese and some international varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon. The care from the vineyards to the cellar is followed by the two brothers Gunther and Klaus, who make use of the advice of Gianfranco Zito in the cellar.

The result is a very articulated and varied range that is divided into three lines: the Gerbino line which boasts two whites, one Chardonnay in purity and a blend of Grillo, Chardonnay and Viognier, a rosé from Nero d’Avola grapes and a red from Nero d’Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah grapes. Then follows the Vurria line, which includes a red and a rosé both from Nerello Mascalese.

And finally the Helios line that closes the range with two remarkable flagship wines such as the Helios Rosso Igp, a new blend that represents the best expression of the red grape vineyards and the territory and the Helios Grillo DOC Sicilia, with aromas of unusual eloquence . But noteworthy is also the concentrated and powerful Vurria Grillo DOC Sicilia and the Vurria Nero d’Avola DOC Sicilia, which bets on the autochthonous Sicilian low red vine par excellence, embellishing it with a modern and meticulous vinification and aging in Tonneaux di Rovere French.
