Fassati

(MONTEPULCIANO) Fassati produces wines in Montepulciano: among its wines the ‘Gersemi’ Nobile of Montepulciano, ‘Selciaia’ Rosso of Montepulciano and many others.

The History of Fassati Wines

Fassati wines have a long tradition: wine production dates back to the early 1900s in Chianti, under the guidance of the Marquis Fassati. In 1989, however, the Fassati winery was built in today’s headquarters in Montepulciano, near the vineyards dating back to 1969.

In 2014, the Della Camera brothers, following a career in road and motorway maintenance, acquire the Fassati winery, with the aim of producing classic wines of Montepulciano, thus carrying on the tradition of their father Augusto, who since the 1950s a small vineyard. The Fassati winery was then renovated and expanded, introducing a modern winemaking, storage, bottling and aging system in wood.

Fassati currently has over 100 hectares of vineyards and 1 million bottles produced annually, and is among the top five realities of Montepulciano in terms of area planted with vines and the production of Nobile di Montepulciano wines.

The terroir of the wines of Fassati

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is probably among the most historic Italian wines and owes much of its success to the terroir particularly suited for the production of red wines.

Fassati wines are born from Guyot-trained vineyards located at altitudes that oscillate around 350 and 400 m a.s.l. The soils are of Pliocene origin and predominantly clayey-silty, moderately calcareous.

The Mediterranean climate, together with the good temperature ranges also derived from the hilly altitudes, favor an excellent aromatic finesse and phenolic development of the grapes.

All ideal prerequisites to give life to wines of great depth, and in particular to enhance the ductile character of Sangiovese. In fact, Sangiovese is the wine par excellence of this territory: the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which in the lands of Fassati acquires great character, elegance and evolutionary potential.

The Philosophy of Wines of Fassati

The principle that distinguishes the philosophy of Fassati wines is to create sincere wines, which enhance the indissoluble bond with the territory and the tradition of Montepulciano.

The traditional Sangiovese, here renamed Prugnolo Gentile, is the undisputed protagonist in the production of Fassati wines, and is often accompanied in small proportions by native vines such as Canaiolo Nero and Ciliegiolo, but also by international vines such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wines of Fassati are born from a very specific philosophy: quality viticulture, low yields in the vineyard and rigorous manual selection to bring only the best grapes with perfect ripeness to the cellar.

Fassati wines are also aged in large Slavonian oak barrels with a capacity of 50-70-100 Hl. This choice of using the large barrel, inspired by the Tuscan tradition, makes it possible to enhance the aromas and soften the tannins of the wines, while preserving the varietal and natural character of the vines.

These are essential prerequisites for not having to intervene with invasive corrective measures during the vinification phase and letting the grapes become the narrator of the territory of origin, in its specific pedoclimatic and different vintages.

The Wines of Fassati

Among the wines of Fassati there are clearly the Rosso di Montepulciano, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva. Savory and rich wines with a sensational polyphenolic outfit, but also long-limbed and elegant and delicately embellished with tertiary notes, always masterfully integrated.

Among the wines of Fassati, the Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG ‘Salarco’ should be considered, an enveloping wine with smooth tannins, clear and multifaceted aromas and excellent evolutionary potential.
Also of great interest is the Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG ‘Gersemi’, a cru of unusual elegance obtained from the best grapes selected from the historic “Via Cupa” vineyard in Acquaviva.

Very exciting among the wines of Fassati is also the Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG ‘Pasiteo’, the most representative wine of the company and which is enjoying great success in international markets.

Particularly engaging is also the Rosso di Montepulciano DOC ‘Selciaia’, which sees the traditional Sangiovese embellished by the presence of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon: A very pleasant wine with great versatility in food pairing.

The range of Fassati wines also includes a Chianti DOCG, two Toscana IGT red wines, a white wine based on Trebbiano and Malvasia and the traditional sweet wine Vin Santo di Montepulciano DOC Riserva. All wines of great elegance, which balance olfactory finesse, flavor and richness on the palate. The testimony, once again, of the great expressive potential of the Montepulciano terroir.
