Fattoria Le Pupille

Fattoria Le Pupille

(GROSSETO) A company with a feminine touch that interprets Sangiovese grapes in an excellent way by producing red wines such as Morellino di Scansano, Pelofino, Saffredi and Poggio Valente.

Fattoria Le Pupille’s History and Philosophy

As the title of a famous film of a previous generation read “The future is a woman”. In the present, at least in industrialized countries, the definitive emancipation of the best part of humanity can be considered an accomplished fact. But things were very different in the late 1980s when Elisabetta Geppetti took over the management of a small estate a few miles south of Scansano in the Tuscan province of Grosseto. There was only one stone farmhouse, a couple of hectares of vineyards and a small cellar where some wine was produced.

Scansano, at about 1650 meters above sea level, is one of the historical areas of its province, the altitude ensured cold winters that neutralize mosquitoes and malaria, and a high level Sangiovese has always been produced here. But the quality of other rapidly evolving areas in Tuscany had not yet been achieved and there were no prestigious companies to lead.

In the following thirty years, the situation changed and that task was carried out with an authority and strength that no one would have imagined. Le Pupille not only became an important name in its area, but throughout Italy.

The wines of Fattoria Le Pupille

A series of excellent wines, made with the help of the various wine consultants that Geppetti chose and coordinated, gave the house a complete line of impressive wines which showed that Scansano’s historical fame was based on solid factors. And his wines, together with others, contributed to the introduction of vineyards in the province of Grosseto, which continued for almost a quarter of a century.

There are enchanting and youthful wines, such as the regular bottling of Morellino di Scansano and Pelofino, a blend of Sangiovese and international varieties, a savory white wine that mixes Sauvignon, Sémillon, Gewürztraminer and Petit Manseng and a sweet but not cloying wine from dessert based essentially on the same grapes. But it is the superior range of line wines that have created the greatest mix, first (at least chronologically), Saffredi, a classic – but also rich and generous – blend of Bordeaux. And above all the imposing Poggio Valente, an impressive demonstration of how good Sangiovese is in this area of Tuscany.
