Ferrara Benito

(TUFO – AVELLINO) One of the most appreciated producers of the Greco del Tufo white wine is Benito Ferrara, who with his winery also produces other Fiano di Avellino white wines and the Taurasi Vigna Quattro Confini red wine, the highest expressions of Campania wines.

Benito Ferrara’s History and Philosophy

Each grape has its first choice place where, historically and traditionally, it is possible to express it in the best way. In the case of Greco di Tufo , probably the best variety of white wine in Italy, that place could very well be the town of Tufo in the province of Avellino in Campania , where currently, an entire series of well-managed estates produces wines that prove themselves completely lived up to the expectations that the fame of the place has acquired. And among these producers, the name of Benito Ferrara has become, in the last fifteen years, one of the major players.

But first we need an explanation of the reasons behind fame. One is certainly the relatively cool climate, which allows the grapes to ripen late, remaining on the vines for a really long period, often until October, when, in most cases, the harvest is aimed at red wines. But perhaps it is even more important that the Tufo soil is very rich in sulphide, deposited centuries ago by the sea that previously submerged the territory. In the nineteenth century, these deposits and their economic potential were recognized by two entrepreneurs, Francesco Di Marzo and Federico Capone, who founded important sulfur mines which, until recently, were the backbone of the local economy. It is therefore indisputable that this geological characteristic gives the wines of Tufo their special flavor, their fragrance, vitality and remarkable freshness.

The wines of Benito Ferrara

Gabriella Ferrara , helped by the production of brilliant wine of the consultant Paolo Caciorgna from Tuscany, has transformed this potential into bottles that are now known and consumed all over the world, and it should be said that the place where the vineyards are located, the area of San Paolo of the town, is a particularly suitable place. It supplies the grapes for the excellent regular offer of Greco di Tufo and, even better, the Vigna della Cicogna selection , an authentic cru and one of the best white wines of southern Italy. And these two wines have recently been joined by a high level Fiano d’Avellino and also by the rich and powerful Taurasi Vigna Quattro Confini.
