The Sedilesu family in Mamoiada in Sardinia produces impeccable red wines, such as Cannonau, Sartiu, Mamuthone, Carnevale and the two Riserva Balla Tundu and Riserva Giuseppe Sedilesu wines.

We could easily speak of  Cannonau  as “the” wine of  Sardinia . Its grapes are in fact native to these lands and not of Spanish origin as it was claimed until a few years ago. Its documentary traces in Sardinia date back to the mid-1500s. To date it is cultivated throughout the island and occupies something like 7500 ha, of which 70% in the province of Nuoro. As often happens, the grape has found places particularly suited for its cultivation, and the classic high-level areas of Cannonau are located near the eastern shores of Sardinia near the towns of Dorgali, Jerzu, Oliena and Mamoiada more in the center of the island in Barbagia, under the Gennargentu mountains.

In the past, the latter has remained outside the chronicles of wine, but currently it is assuming an important role in the production of this grape variety and is indicated by many as the home of Cannonau in Sardinia. Among the many wineries in Mamoiada, the Sedilesu family winery is certainly noteworthy , which, in recent years, has been at the forefront of the production of quality Cannonau, with its powerful, warm and generous offers , produced exclusively from this grape. Their story could be read as it is done with a manual to achieve success, with a plot almost too good to be true.

It all began a generation ago with the purchase of a small plot, a hectare of vineyards, which, thanks to the tireless efforts of this family so united, has grown up to twelve times compared to the original surface. Mamoiada is located 650 meters above sea level and altitude is undoubtedly a fundamental factor in the balance of wines. In fact, the nocturnal freshness contrasts with the burning daytime heat and this remarkable temperature range gives the wines personality despite an important alcoholic component. The soil, of very ancient origin, was formed with the disintegration of granite, very common on the island. The yield is consequently contained, but the quantity is balanced by an admirable quality.

The family practices essential viticulture, which knows how to accept what Nature is willing to offer, and the chemical compounds, with the exception of a light use of sulfur and copper, are unknown in the care of the vineyards. In the cellar only sulphites are used and fermentations are spontaneous. The line is varied and includes impeccable examples of Cannonau , such as Sartiu , Mamuthone and Carnival . The pride of the place, however, must be attributed to two superb Reserves: Ballu Tundu and, logically, the wine dedicated to the founder, the Riserva Giuseppe Sedilesu
