Il Verro

(FORMICOLA – CASERTA) A company that is committed to safeguarding the territory and its grapes and vines, in particular Casavecchia, Pallagrello Bianco e Nero and Coda di Pecora, the latter rediscovered by Il Verro and its owner Cesare Avenia. For about six years they have also been producing organic wine.

Il Verro’s History and Terroir

The Il Verro winery is located in southern Italy in Campania in the small town of Acquavalle , on the slopes of Monte Maggiore , in Formicola in the province of Caserta , located in a valley between the mountains of the high Caserta area of the Trebulani chain .

Here the landscape is green and luxuriant, the gaze is lost in a succession of woods and small villages that meet on the street exuding history and Bourbons. The grapes here enjoy a temperate climate and a perfect altitude about 330m above sea level, thanks to the basin rich in mineral waters of Riardo.

The Philosophy of the wines of Il Verro

The company owns about 14 hectares of property, but only 4 are planted with vines, a preference given to the  soils rich in lava and with exposure to South South-East, and produces about 20,000 bottles resulting from the processing of 3 native vines such as the Casavecchia grape , Black and White Pallagrello and Sheep’s Tail . The wines produced fall into the Terre del Volturno Igt .

The wines of Il Verro

The history of the Casavecchia grape is so ancient and representative of the Middle Volturno Valley , so much so that we find traces of it in a quote by Pliny the Elder in the XIV book of the Naturalis Historia. The Pallagrello Bianco e Nero is a grape variety, which as the name Pallagrello (rotondetto) indicates, precious and rare, a not indifferent patrimony, which gives really high results in production.

But another grape variety that has been rediscovered, enhanced and saved from the oblivion of the grapes, just from the Verro, is the ancient Coda di Pecora grape , once used by farmers to make home wine and, to which the company destined for one hectare, which thanks to painstaking work, experiments have been underway for some years, the wine produced by this grape variety, Sheep, is bursting. A note of merit goes to Lautonis Casavecchia Terre del Volturno PGI, where three P’s are highly recommended: Deep, Perfumed and Persistent.

To date, the new adventure for Il Verro and for the five friends who have challenged fate since the 1960s, is now the production of organic wine. In fact, the company has recently obtained the certificates of organic agricultural cultivation and production of organic wines, which will surely have the quality characteristic, which has distinguished this company for years.
