La Gerla

Vittorio Fiore e Alberto Passeri

(MONTALCINO) The La Gerla estate in Montalcino was born from Sergio Rossi’s foresight. The Tuscan red wines, famous all over the world, are Brunello di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva gli Angeli, Rosso di Montalcino, and Birba, a Toscana Rosso IGT.

La Gerla’s History and Terroir

In the mid-70s Montalcino presented itself in a decidedly different way than it is today, a peaceful, almost dozing country, there were some vineyards, those originating from the most historic farms, but the relationship with other crops such as oil and the arable land was decidedly unfavorable for the vine, moreover the fame of the territory and of Brunello in general had not yet jumped to international attention.

However, this situation changed quickly, especially thanks to the arrival of new investors, some from Tuscany , many from northern Italy, successful entrepreneurs or professionals, who loved wine and wanted to get involved for something important. One of the pioneers was Sergio Rossi , a successful advertiser from Milan, who arrived with a group of friends. In 1976 he bought the Colombaio-Santi estate from what was the most well-known family in the Brunello panorama and that from the Canalicchio area, the one north-east of Montalcino, they were already producing the grapes destined for the best wines; the farm was restored and functional and technologically advanced cellars were created for the times, the first bottles ofThe Gerla began to be distributed in Italy and immediately all over the world.

The wines of La Gerla

Rossi with his wines immediately showed the characteristics that distinguished the Sangiovese of this part of Montalcino: the fragrance, finesse, elegance, roundness and velvety consistency. Rossi, however, aimed at something more ambitious and, advised by the oenologist and friend Vittorio Fiore , who in turn was a pioneer in his working methods and a driving force in the creation of many prestigious estates, purchased another plot near Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the south of Montalcino, a place where wines of greater structure and concentration could be produced. In a short time the blend has proven to be a success and La Gerla can proudly say that its wines, Brunello di Montalcino , theBrunello di Montalcino Riserva the Angels , the Rosso di Montalcino , and the Birba , have conquered a prominent place on the market for over 40 years.

Sergio’s heirs continue his work today with the same passion and dedication.
