La Rasina

(MONTALCINO – SIENA) La Rasina is the winery led by the Mantengoli family, which produces exceptional Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino wines.

History and Terroir of La Rasina wines

Marco Mantengoli

Montalcino went from a few hectares of vineyards at the end of the 1960s to being the area it is today, with over 200 bottlers and around 3,500 hectares of vineyards. The results, of course, then reached new heights, thanks to a massive influx of capital and men and women with a passion for wine and the ambition to carve a niche in this world.

However, there are some realities that constitute a nucleus of ‘historical’ properties, which boast decades of serious and professional work and wines of an indisputable level of quality. One of these is undoubtedly La Rasina, owned by the Mantengoli family.

La Rasina was founded by Santi Mantengoli in the 70s at a time when olive trees and wheat were an important part of local agriculture. The work was continued by his son Vasco Mantengoli, who began bottling the wine in 1988. Since 1997, wine production, now the absolute focus of the estate, has come under the careful direction of Marco Mantengoli, whose dedication to work and the desire to produce great wines exactly in this place are total.

The development of the estate was greatly favored by the advice of the oenologist Paolo Caciorgna, whose work experience in Montalcino, particularly in the eastern area, has given him wide admiration. The company can rightly boast a winning team, thanks to which it has managed to produce exceptional wines. Year after year.

Terroir of La Rasina wines

For over thirty years La Rasina has operated in the area north-east of Montalcino, the area overlooking the Val d’Orcia Park. Once the area with exposure of the vineyards to the east and north-east of Montalcino was little considered. However, since the 1980s, this area has hosted a number of wineries whose wines are systematically counted among the best in Montalcino.

The area where the wines of La Rasina are born is less hot than the south side, but this is compensated by a lower altitude, about 350 meters. The greater evening and nighttime freshness favors the fragrance and aromatic complexity, which gives the wines a soft and velvety touch.

To date, La Rasina has 15 hectares of vineyards: 8 in Brunello, 1.5 in Rosso di Montalcino and the rest is IGT. The only grape variety vinified is Sangiovese.

Wines of La Rasina

The range of La Rasina wines consists of 3 different interpretations of Brunello di Montalcino, 2 versions of Rosso di Montalcino and an IGT Toscana Rosso 100% Sangiovese wine.

Among the Brunello di Montalcino di La Rasina we find the Brunello di Montalcino base, the flagship wine of production that represents the company’s philosophy. It is a sumptuous and slender wine, with a long and satisfying sip: among the best Brunello di Montalcino for its depth and olfactory expressiveness.

Of great interest among the wines of La Rasina is also the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva “Il DiVasco”, obtained from a single vineyard produced only in the best vintages, which takes its name from its founder Vasco Mantengoli.

The Brunello di Montalcino Persante of La Rasina was born instead as a memory of Santi Mantengoli, who gave a new impetus to the cultivation of vines in the lands of La Rasina.

Among the most immediate and least aged wines of La Rasina we find the Rosso di Montalcino, and Rosso di Montalcino ‘Ines’, produced only in the best vintages. Finally we find the IGT Toscana Sangiovese wine, a Sangiovese 100% vinified exclusively in steel, ideal for daily consumption and chopping board of cold cuts and cold cuts.

The wines of La Rasina are the custodians of a wine savoire-faire fundamental to the history of Montalcino: they are wines that testify to the great eloquence of the terroir in a sincere and uncompromising way.
