Le Due Terre’s History and Philosophy

Prepotto, a village located in the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC , could seem, in terms of climate and location, to a part of the nearby Collio area to the east. The border with Slovenia is very close indeed, the climate is a bit cold and, compared to red wine, there is a considerably greater quantity of white produced. All characteristics also of the surrounding area. But Prepotto is actually one of the few municipalities in Friuli where high quality wines are made from both white and red grapes, although obviously the varieties must be chosen with care.

Late seasoners such as Cabernet or Pignolo would rarely reach full maturity, and in fact the best companies have chosen the appropriate red grapes for their specific microclimate: Merlot and Schioppettino . The latter is practically a local specialty: its forest fruit and spicy aromas are expressed here as rarely elsewhere. But the best initiation to the character of these wines can only be found by visiting the small, but high-level, cellar of Flavio Basilicata and Silvana Forte.

The wines of Le Due Terre

It is easy to find them: their winery and winery are located not far from the crossroads of the road that runs north from Cormons towards Cividale del Friuli . And there can be no doubt that the vineyards, just above the road on the right, are them: well cultivated and cared for, every leaf and every bunch of grapes are in place, the vineyards are kept with impeccable care. And from these 5 hectares the couple has, for a few years, produced wines that have earned them a place of honor in the region’s Pantheon . The emphasis is on local varieties, the white Sacrisassi is a blend of Friulano and Ribolla Gialla , the red of the same name combines Schioppettino and Refosco . But international vines are in no way ignored or overlooked – Pinot Noir is one of the few valid ones in all of Friuli , while Merlot competes with the best in the region. But what distinguishes each wine in the line is the scrupulous care invested in their production: clean, intense, expressive, constant and characterized, they are also “organic” in a way that few others can boast: their sulfur levels seem almost a challenge to orthodox oenology.
