1) Sideways (2004)
Plot of the movie: Sideways is definitely a cult film that cannot fail to be mentioned in such a list: it is a 2004 American comedy-drama directed by Alexander Payne and written by Jim Taylor and Payne. A film adaptation of Rex Pickett’s novel of the same name, Sideways follows two men in their forties, Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti), a depressed teacher and unsuccessful writer, and Jack Cole (Thomas Haden Church), an actor who went first, who travel a week in Santa Barbara County wine country to celebrate Jack’s next wedding. Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen also act. Sideways won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Haden Church) and Best Supporting Actress (Madsen).
Back to Burgundy(2018)
Plot:
In “Return to Burgundy”, Jean (Pio Marmaï), the prodigal son of a family of winemakers, returns to France from his current home in Australia after learning that his father is ill. The feelings of youth work on him like the Proustian madeleines, although it is not easy to reunite with his alliterative name brothers.
Juliette (Ana Girardot) is happy with her return, but Jérémie (François Civil) wonders why her brother – 10 years away – never recognized her mother’s death. While the reason for Jean’s spoiler for not returning is surprisingly plausible, his departure in the intermediate time is less so. While “Return to Burgundy” is taking place, it often seems that phone calls or the timely removal of a letter from a jacket pocket may have spared this clan of resentment.

Mondovino (2004)
Trama:
Mondovino (in English World of Wine) is a 2004 documentary film on the impact of globalization on the various wine regions of the world written and directed by the American filmmaker Jonathan Nossiter. He was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and a César award. The film explores the impact of globalization on the various wine-producing regions and the influence of critics such as Robert Parker and consultants such as Michel Rolland in defining an international style. It contrasts the ambitions of the big multinational wine producers, in particular Robert Mondavi, against the small individual wineries that traditionally produce wines with individual character guided exclusively by their terroir.

Natural Resistance(2014)

Natural Resistance is an Italian-French documentary made by Jonathan Nossiter. The film tells the story of four Italian winemakers (Elena Pantaleoni, Stefano Bellotti, Giovanna Tiezzi and Corrado Dottori) who decided to marry an ecological and progressive viticulture in full respect of nature and its times: however, for years they have had to face laws restrictive, quirky and fight against the endless bureaucracy of controls imposed by the European Union and associations of wine growers. The scenes of the vineyards alternate footage of the Cineteca di Bologna, which reveal the profound and ancient relationship between culture and agriculture.

Red Obsession (2013)

Red Obsession is an Australian documentary film from 2013 that collects interviews with wine producers and wine lovers from all over the world. The film is narrated by Russell Crowe. Red Obsession was co-directed and co-written by David Roach and Warwick Ross. Red Obsession accompanies the public on a journey from Bordeaux to China, where wine producers, critics and wine lovers are interviewed. Wine industry trends are also examined, with occasional narratives provided by Russell Crowe.

SOMM (2013)

SOMM is an American documentary from 2013 following the attempts of four candidates to pass the extremely difficult exam of the Master Sommelier, a test with one of the lowest success rates in the world. Directed by Jason Wise, a sequel, SOMM: Into the Bottle, was released in 2015 and a third film, SOMM 3, was released in October 2018. A TV series based on the film launched on the Esquire Network in November 2015.

It is a documentary on wine 2015 and a sequel to SOMM (2013). The film tells the story and the history of wine through ten different bottles opened throughout the film in different chapters. Directed by Jason Wise, it premiered at the Napa Valley Film Festival and featured the main cast of the original SOMM film, as well as illustrious characters from the world of wine. The film was distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films. A third film, SOMM 3, released in 2018.

The third film in the SOMM documentary series, after the 2013 SOMM and the 2015 SOMM: Into the Bottle. Directed by Jason Wise and distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films, SOMM 3 focuses on two tastings reminiscent of the 1976 Paris Judgment.

Plot of the movie: Bottle Shock is a 2008 American comedy-drama film based on the 1976 wine competition called “Judgment of Paris”, when Californian wine defeated French wine in a blind taste test. He is played by Alan Rickman, Chris Pine and Bill Pullman and is directed by Randall Miller, who wrote the screenplay with Jody Savin and Ross Schwartz. It premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

The film follows seven wine families from the French region of Burgundy over the course of a whole year and delves into the cultural and creative process of wine production, as well as its deep links with the land. What’s in the rhythm of a year, from vines to grapes to wine? The film is divided into four seasonal sections and takes place in that scenario: spring showers, drought, heat waves, hail and storms, harvest moons and the wet cold of winter. Each vintage is a time capsule, a piece of history in the bottle of a very specific year, with its particular weather pattern, its crises and its triumphs. It’s all right, whether you want it or not, and 2011 was full of dramas.

The film is loosely based on the 2004 novel of the same name by British author Peter Mayle. Barolo Boys (2014)

It is a documentary film of 2014 on the history of a group of young winemakers (later called Barolo Boys) who in the 80s and 90s radically changed the world of Barolo wine, in the Langhe, in north-western Italy. The film describes the last thirty years of technical innovations and changes in the history of Barolo, almost unknown until the 70s (apart from its homeland, an area of 11 municipalities in the Langhe) and now considered one of the best wines red to the world. This is partly due to the work and innovations of the Barolo Boys, or Modernists, who have introduced a series of technical innovations into the world of Italian wine.

Plot of the movie: It is a film directed by Antonio Padovan and based on the novel by Fulvio Ervas. The yellow is set among the vineyards of the Veneto hills. Giuseppe Battiston plays Stucky, a half Venetian and half Persian inspector who investigates a series of murders. The only suspect is the defutno count Desiderio Ancillotto, a great winemaker who seems to have committed suicide by staging a picturesque and theatrical suicide.

Anthony’s family runs a small Italian restaurant in London. When his childhood friend, Dario, dies in a suspicious accident, Anthony inherits a vineyard in Sant’Angelo, the village where his parents came from in Italy. Surprised by the large sum of money offered to him by a curious Italian “Maestro del vino” for the land he has just inherited, and considering the mysterious circumstances surrounding Dario’s death, Anthony decides to drive to Sant’Angelo. Anthony soon feels in the middle of something he doesn’t understand and wants to leave, but … He gets tangled up in the network of “Love” and suddenly finds himself the target of a crazy manhunt. But then, “Who says miracles don’t happen?”.

Wine for the Confused (2004)
Plot of the movie: Wine for the Confused is a documentary hosted by John Cleese. It is a carefree introduction to wine for beginners. Cleese guides viewers through the basics of the types of wine and vines, the winemaking, tasting and terminology, the purchase and storage of wines, through direct narration and interviews with wine producers and wine sellers. The length of the film is 92 minutes and includes visits to California wineries. The film ends with a large group that leads a blind wine tasting with unexpected results.

El camino del vino (2010)
Plot of the movie: The famous sommelier Charlie Arturaola arrives in Mendoza, Argentina, to take part in the glamorous “Masters of Food and Wine” event, after “traveling the world on a bottle of wine”, as he usually says.
Once in the event and before its tasting, something unusual happens between glamor, stress and marketing: it loses its palate. Charlie needs to get it back. In search of a solution to his problem, he has decisive encounters with the most important people in the world of wine, such as Michel Rolland, who thinks he has to “wash” his palate with the best wines from the region. Charlie begins a journey from huge cellars through small vineyards and the harvest processions get closer to the people of the villages who work the vine.
