Montevetrano

(SAN CIPRIANO PICENTINO – SALERNO) The Montevetrano winery, located in San Cipriano Picentino  north-east of the coastal city of  Salerno, boasts excellent quality wines, the flagship is its red wine Montevetrano 1992.

Montevetrano’s History and Philosophy

The province of Salerno in Campania has long been known for tourism for its extraordinary panorama and monuments, part of the glorious past that dates back to the ancient Greeks and is symbolized in the magnificent temple of Paestum, probably the most grandiose example of Doric architecture which has been handed down to us from the ancient world. Equally exceptional is the Amalfi coast, a panorama composed of a series of breathtaking beauty curves, steep by vertigo, resting on the blue sea and home to splendid places such as Amalfi and Rapallo itself .

The wines of Montevetrano

The wine in this province has been produced since time immemorial, in all probability another gift from the Greeks who built temples and brought the systematic cultivation of vineyards in southern Italy many centuries before the birth of Christ. But this was the wine of the Mediterranean diet , inevitable at all meals, and the vineyard, together with the olive grove and the wheat field were the basic elements of life.

All this, however, changed drastically in 1992 with the birth of Montevetrano , a bottle that came out of  San Cipriano Picentino north-east of the coastal city of Salerno . Equally obscure, from a professional point of view, were the circumstances of his birth. The producer, Silvia Imparato , was not a farmer, he was in fact a photographer who lived in Rome where, fortunately for him, he frequented a circle of wine lovers and friends. But his family owned hilly land planted with vines in the town and the challenge of testing themselves in a new adventure seemed irresistible.

The rest, regardless of his determination and his vineyards, was done by the invaluable assistance of the winemaker Riccardo Cotarella , both a friend and a trusted consultant. The 1991 vintage of Montevetrano was a remarkable undertaking, but the turning point was 1992, a wine that set a new standard of excellence for the province of Salerno . A discontinuous blend compared to the past of Aglianico and Bordeaux grapes , awakened a dormant viticulture and local enology. And it is now accompanied by an excellent offer of pure Aglianico .
