Moschioni

(CIVIDALE DEL FRIULI – UDINE) Michele Moschioni aims to produce powerful, solid, warm and full wines thanks to his vines located on the Eastern Hills of Friuli such as the Schioppettino and the Celtico, but the  pride of the house is the powerful and intense  Pignolo.

Moschioni’s History and Philosophy

Cividale del Friuli , a charming and historic town that was once, before the growth and development of Udine, the capital of the region, is located in a position further north than most of the wine-growing areas of the Eastern Hills of the denomination of the Friuli . The high hills and mountains behind it are often covered by snow even in spring and the cold climate, even in summer, is not something occasional at all. But despite this fact, there is an important presence of red grapes in the local vineyards, and many of the varieties present, Cabernet , Refosco , Pignolo, they ripen late, something that forces serious producers to further efforts in the vineyards if they want to avoid strong tannins, aromas and vegetable flavors.

None of this, however, seems to disturb Michele Moschioni , who produces exclusively red wine in his 10 hectares of estate in the town. If anything the opposite, rather than aiming for an elegant style that favors finesse, touch, aroma, has done exactly the opposite: the prominence that he and his wines have gained, not at all small, is due to the large scale and size of the on wines. Powerful, solid, hot, alcoholic, and full, they would seem wines from an area much further south. But their intense fragrance and varietal character leaves little doubt that they are in fact exemplary bottles of Friuli.

The wines of Moschioni

The secret? (which is clear from us, it is not a secret at all) superior viticulture with low yields and late harvests, supported by desiccation of the grapes to add further body and richness. To tell the truth, the latest practice is always of minor importance, there is no desire to produce a local version of Amarone. An excellent Bordeaux blend exists in two versions, Celtico and Real , but the focus is on native varieties that distinguish the region of Friuli , Schioppettino , Refosco and Pignolo . Elegant the first, very fruity and full the second, but the pride of the house is the powerful and intense Pignolo, concentrated, but balanced, one of those wines that saved a grape that seemed endangered.
