Nicolis’s History and Philosophy

For many centuries, the most consistent part of Italian wine production was in the south of Italy, but the situation has changed substantially, almost radically, in the last quarter of a century. The production of Veneto , something like ten million hectoliters, in fact takes over in a rather stunning way. If we want to talk about red wine, then we must, while we analyze its production in Veneto, move towards Valpolicella , the denomination that rises above the others in terms of hectares and production: over 8,000 hectares of vineyards that produce about 450 thousand hectoliters of wine per year. An ocean, sold all over the world and, in the case of Amarone , at prices that are actually very substantial.

It is natural, therefore, that Verona, the “capital” of this area in a certain sense, can boast some of the largest, and also most historic, farms in Italy, in a past in which small farmers, who had no neither the resources nor the knowledge to sell their production directly had to entrust this marketing to others. But this changed after the war, and one of the first to move was the Nicolis winery of San Pietro in Cariano in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica.

In 1951, Angelo Nicolis , who previously used the grapes from his vineyards to satisfy only the needs of his family, decided to transform his passion into a commercial activity, bottling the wine he produced. More than 65 years of energy and commitment have transformed this company into one of the leaders of the appellation with a series of wines that combine recognizable typicality with consistently exceptional quality. Two names that share responsibility and honor: Giancarlo Nicolis in the vineyards and Giuseppe Nicolis in the cellar.

And the flagship of the company, the Amarone della Valpolicella Classico “Amborsan” , can only be defined in one way: a great wine.
