Nottola

(MONTEPULCIANO – SIENA) Nottola is one of the most representative realities of Montepulciano recognized internationally: among its wines Nobile di Montepulciano, Rosso di Montepulciano, Supetuscan ‘Anterivo’ and many others.

The History of Nottola Wines

The Nottola winery was founded in 1992 by the impulse of Anterivo Giomarelli who, following a long and prestigious career as a manufacturer, at a certain point in his life found himself constantly involved in the world of wine.

The winery was built next to the enchanting and historic Villa Bracci, surrounded by farmhouses typical of the Tuscan architectural tradition and which since the 18th century housed a cellar, an oil mill, stables and a barn.

The name Nottola derives from the crossroads of Bivio di Nottola in Montepulciano, located on a hill in the heart of the village. There, in the surrounding countryside, Anterivo Giomarelli planted 20 hectares of vineyards to produce high quality wines that reflected the tradition of Montepulciano.

Today the winery has over 25 hectares and is coordinated by Anterivo’s son, Giuliano Giomarelli and his nephew Stefano and Palma, assisted by the prestigious oenological consultancy of the genius loci of Italian wine Riccardo Cotarella.

The terroir of the Nottola wines

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is probably among the most historic Italian wines and owes much of its success to the terroir particularly suited for the production of red wines.

Nottola wines come from spurred cordon trained vineyards located at altitudes that oscillate around 380m a.s.l. The soils are of Pliocene origin and predominantly clayey-silty and rich in skeleton.

The Mediterranean climate with higher temperatures in July and August, while in the following period the good thermal excursions also derived from the hilly altitudes favor an excellent aromatic finesse and phenolic development of the grapes.

All essential prerequisites for producing wines of great depth, and in particular for enhancing the varietal character of Sangiovese. In fact, Sangiovese is the wine par excellence of this territory: the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which in the soils of Nottola acquires great character, depth and elegance.

The Philosophy of Nottola Wines

The Filofosia of Nottola wines places great emphasis on enhancing the tradition of Montepulciano, but is also embellished by a modern look.

The pounding Sangiovese, here renamed Prugnolo Gentile, is often accompanied by the international Merlot, which also confers softness in the assembly of supertuscan wines of great interest.

Nottola wines are aged both in large barrels as in the Tuscan tradition, and in French oak barriques, as in the case of the Riserve and the Supertuscan ‘Anterivo’.

Nottola Wines

Among the wines of Nottola there are clearly the Rosso di Montepulciano, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva. Very sincere and eloquent interpretations of the territorial expressiveness of Montepulciano: Savory and rich wines with a sensational polyphenolic outfit, but also long-limbed and elegant and delicately embellished with tertiary notes, always masterfully integrated.

The solemn supertuscan ‘Anterivo’, a 50% Merlot 50% Sangiovese blend, should also be taken into consideration. It is an enveloping wine with smooth tannins, clear and multifaceted aromas and excellent evolutionary potential and which boasts a very imaginative label created by Maestro Giulio Galgani.

But there is also ‘Itinera’ a dense and full blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, a very gastronomic white Vermentino wine with a mineral character and excellent freshness, not to forget the inevitable Vin Santo, a traditional specialty of great value. Everything is done with the expert advice of viticulture consultant Riccardo Cotarella, who has been involved in the operation since the beginning, and from the high quality grapes provided through the efforts of agronomist Franco Feliciotti.

A work that could not have been more eloquent and tangible: complexity, elegance, strength, persistence and character. Fully among the best wines of Montepulciano.
