The Story of Paola Sordo

(CUNEO) The Paola Sordo company is located halfway between Castiglione Falletto and Barolo, in the province of Cuneo, in the heart of the Langhe.

The view here is dominated by the tower of the castle of the medieval village of Castiglione Falletto, surrounded by the slopes of the Langhe hills, which chase each other embellished with vineyards that create suggestive multicolored geometric designs.

As is well known, the most beautiful places are often also the most suitable for the production of wines. And it is in fact here that Giorgio Sordo dedicated the company to his daughter Paola Sordo, with the hope that he would carry on with enthusiasm the family tradition that has been handed down since 1912.

And so it was: Paola Sordo carries on the tradition by having part of the 53 hectares of vineyards of the Sordo family, located in the municipalities of Castiglione Falletto, Monforte d’Alba, Serralunga d’Alba, Novello, and Verduno.

The production is divided into a basic Barolo, and 6 different Barolo crus, each with a unique identity. Other traditional wines of the Langhe such as Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto d’Alba and other Piedmontese wines such as Roero Arneis, Moscato d’Asti are also of great interest.

In fact, Paola Sordo’s wines are not only an expression of this territory in its renowned pedoclimatic specificities, but become narrators of the most noble quintessence of the terroir: the story of a family and its love for the Langhe, of an indissoluble bond with passion for the production of fine wine, which has been handed down for four generations.

Terroir of Paola Sordo’s wines

Paola Sordo’s vineyards are located in vineyards with varying exposures and altitudes ranging between 280 and 450 meters above sea level. The climate here is favored by the altitudes which favor good temperature excursions, providential for the development of the aromatic finesse of the grapes.

The soils where Paola Sordo’s Barolo wines are born are heterogeneous: the calcareous marls of Elvezian origin from Castiglion Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba and Monforte give life to wines of great complexity, elegance and longevity. Instead, the wines from the Tortonian soils of Verduno have a more floral, long-limbed and vertical character.

Each cru boasts its own specificities also in terms of subsoil and microclimate that give each one a unique identity. This testifies once again to the extraordinary ductility of Nebbiolo, a grape symbol of the Langhe, capable of renewing itself and becoming a narrator of the territory of origin.

Philosophy of Paola Sordo’s wines

The link with the winemaking tradition of the Langhe is certainly a key element in the production of Paola Sordo’s wines, who responsibly guards the family’s enological know-how.

For this reason Paola Sordo exclusively vinifies indigenous Piedmontese vines, adopting a traditionalist-inspired approach: long submerged cap macerations and refining in large Slavonian barrels, without invasive make-up, but preserving the sincere expressiveness of the varietal character of traditional vines.

Tradition, however, as well as it was learned in Piedmont, cannot ignore the dialectic with the present to be effective.

Another essential aspect for the production of Parola Sordo wines is full respect for biodiversity and environmental sustainability, which inspire modern agriculture. In fact, for Paola Sordo’s wines, chemical fertilizers and herbicides are not allowed in their production.

Wines of Paola Sordo

The indigenous Piedmontese vines are the protagonists of the production of Paola Sordo’s wines. In particular, Nebbiolo, which finds an ideal habitat in the Langhe, giving life to wines with a unique, unusual and modern character, capable of wisely balancing immediacy and complexity, particularly enhancing the sapid mineral tones and the nuanced and floral aromas.

In fact, Paola Sordo’s wager to make Barolo wines that emphasize finesse and elegance, rather than concentration or power, is very interesting, with very convincing results with this approach, like few others in the appellation.

Particularly interesting among the wines of Paola di Sordo are the Barolos, which represent the flagship of the production, made from the most suitable vineyards of the company.

The classic Barolo of Paola Sordo is obtained from the plots located in the municipalities of Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, Barolo, Novello, La Morra, Verduno and Grinzane Cavour. It is a wine of rare elegance that bets on enhancing the varietal and floral character of Nebbiolo: it seduces the nose with floral and fruity aromas, embellished with hinted spicy toasted notes wisely integrated, conferred by the large Slavonian barrels.

Among the red wines of great interest is the cru of Barolo Gabutti from the vineyards located on the land of Helvetian origin of Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most suitable areas of the appellation for wines of great longevity.

Gabutti by Paola Sordo is characterized by eloquent, multifaceted and refined floral and tertiary aromas, which reveal themselves like a peacock’s tail towards a palate with a sensational polyphenolic set and an imperishable persistence in retrolfaction. A very interesting wine that cleverly combines traditional and sincere style with drinkability and modern elegance, a prerequisite that is increasingly required today by demanding wine consumers.

Also worth discovering are the other crus of Barolo di Paola Sordo such as Rocche di Castiglione, Parussi, Monvigliero, Perno and Ravera, each of which boasts stylistic specificities linked to the “terroir” to which it belongs.

Among the red wines of Paola Sordo, other traditional Piedmontese wines such as Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, Nebbiolo d’Alba and Barbaresco should also be taken into consideration.

But Piedmont is not a region that boasts excellence only among red wines, in fact also white wines of Paola Sordo, including the inevitable Roero Arneis, should be tried.

All wines of great character, which combine great olfactory finesse, flavor and richness on the palate. A testimony once again of the great expressive potential of the ‘terroir’ of the Langhe and the need for new generations to preserve, pass on and enrich the precious Italian winemaking tradition with new ideas.
