Petrussa’s History and Philosophy

The two most prestigious denominations of Friuli, Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli , are normally described in a standard way. Although geologically similar in soil composition, the former, fresh and ventilated with a production that, for 80%, is represented by white wine, is considered the regional capital of fresh and fruity wine, which has given an identity to the denomination and a prominent place in national and international markets. The second, warmer in temperature, due to the influence of the plain east of Udine, produces richer and fuller red wines that represent the best of the region.

Like all generalizations, however, these descriptions lose sight of important details, and in the case of the town of Prepotto , this subdivision is far from reality. Located in the northeast corner of the Colli Orientali, its vineyards border on Slovenia and the local climate is not hot at all, on the contrary it is significantly cool, a fact and a factor that has influenced the wine-growing choices over the generations and oenological. This is a place for varieties that ripen early, such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon for white grapes and Merlot and Schioppettino for red wines.

The town has had, and continues to have, a number of illustrious wineries that have taken advantage of this micro-climate to produce high-level wines, and among the leaders for decades there has undoubtedly been the Petrussa Agricultural Company of the brothers Gianni and Paolo Petrussa , the first in the vineyards, the second in the cellar. Their philosophy could not be simpler and is reflected in the wines: given that it is not the place for wines of power and intensity, the emphasis is on the elegance, fragrance and purity of the varietal expressiveness, obtained at the highest levels in many excellent wines of their line.

The wines of Petrussa

To name just a few of the many offerings: Chardonnary S. Elena fermented in barrels, with the flagrance of white peaches and vanilla; the slightly herbaceous, tasty, and Sauvignon mineral ; the round and full Merlot Rosso Petrussa ; and the classic Schioppettino di Prepotto , from the grape that here gives results that it does not reach anywhere else. Not to mention the exceptional dessert wine based on Verduzzo , Pensiero , simply a large bottle.
