Poggio Al Sole’s History and Philosophy

Family traditions have an evident importance in many areas of work, particularly in the world of wine, where the customs related to procedures, operations, traditions and working methods are handed down from generation to generation. The varieties of the grapes can change, as well as the objective conditions of the soil and the climate, but the methods of cultivation of the grapes, the harvesting procedures, the cellar operations, aging and bottling remain, if appropriate, the same . As necessary is the marketing activity, taking care of customer relationships, and therefore it is important to create and maintain an image that will guarantee commercial success over the years.

This may explain the success of Poggio al Sole , a small property (despite the 20 hectares of vineyards) located in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa in the Chianti Classico production area , just above the ancient abbey of Badia di Passignano . The property was founded by a Florentine jeweler and boasted a reputation for quality as early as the 70s and 80s, but the level has steadily and inexorably grown in the last thirty years under the new ownership, that of the Davaz family , originally producers in Bündner Herrschaft in the Grisons Canton of Switzerland.

The wines of Poggio Al Sole

Giovanni Davaz , as a consequence, was profoundly expert in the techniques and strategies of trade, and this was obviously of great help in rapidly affirming a new level of excellence in the world of wine. The altitude and exposure are ideal for Sangiovese grapes , the basis of his work, and the soils are the classics of the variety. The vineyards are quite contained, Poggio al Sole offers for sale only one hundred thousand bottles of its 20 hectares and the oak is used for aging in barrels for the regular offer, for the selection of Casasilia  barrels that are regularly rotated to ensure the cleanliness and complexity that correctly used wood can impart to the wine. The estate was initially entirely managed by Giovanni Davaz and his wife, Giovanni, agronomist, winemaker and owner of the cellar.
