Poggio Antico

Poggio Antico in Montalcino with professionalism and ability takes care of its rich and elegant red wines: Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino Altero and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva.

Poggio Antico’s History and Philosophy

Montalcino boasts over 200 bottles of wines produced in its territory, moreover the total area destined for the production of its most famous wine, Brunello di Montalcino , now exceeds 2000 hectares. Nothing compares to the early days of this denomination, at the time little known outside of Tuscany and certainly devoid of the prestige that now distinguishes it. The companies that produced wine with their own label were few, true pioneers and without a doubt at the time it would have been impossible to imagine that the value of the land for the production of Brunello would have reached the current 650,000 euros (and more) per hectare.

Among these was Poggio Antico , an estate that can be proud of the fact that it was already producing an excellent wine in 1982 and that since then has never lowered its quality level. In each vintage, its wines establish themselves among the leaders in its production area and denomination.

The position, in the warm and sunny south-western part of Montalcino, is delightful and the altitude undoubtedly represents an additional advantage in terms of aroma and elegance. But much of the merit is undoubtedly due to the work of all the staff who have worked for years in this company and know its vineyards and the area to perfection. For about a year the company has changed ownership but not its intentions, which could not be clearer: to continue this path towards excellence, respecting the historical memory of the estate. Excellence requires responsibility, farsightedness and hard work and as evidence of this, since 2017 they have started converting to organic farming practices and will soon also receive certification.

The wines of Poggio Antico

The new property also intends to enhance the micro areas of the vineyards, thanks to the study of the soils which will lead to a parcel vinification and the exclusive cultivation of sangiovese. The rich and elegant wines are Rosso di Montalcino , Brunello di Montalcino , Brunello di Montalcino Altero and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva .
