(CASTIGLIONE DEL LAGO – PERUGIA) Poggio Bertaio is one of the best Umbrian companies producing Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot and Grechetto. Cimbalo, Crovello and Apo are some of his most renowned selections.
Poggio Bertaio’s History and Philosophy
Becoming a self-producer is the dream of every wine consultant, and Fabrizio Ciufoli is certainly no exception. Born and raised in the town of Castiglione del Lago on the western shore of Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in central Italy, Ciufoli studied oenology and became, within decades, one of the most important consultants in the vast territory that includes his Umbria, the Marche, and, to the east, Tuscany. Castiglione del Lago, in fact, borders with Montepulciano, and Ciufoli has worked both there and in Montepulciano, not to mention also a multitude of companies in the nearby province of Arezzo.
He showed, almost naturally, an exceptional talent with the two main grapes of this area of Italy, Sangiovese and Montepulciano , but also with international grapes, in particular Cabernet and Merlot , which have no secrets for him and he also has demonstrated a safe hand with both Chardonnay and Grechetto , the main white grape of Umbria . In 1972 the family purchased a property in his hometown, and in more recent years, Ciufoli, whose brother Ugo takes care of the agricultural part of the company in a substantial territory (the vineyards, which have been planted over the years, cover more than twenty hectares), he has devoted more and more time to his vineyards, which have only increased the reputation of a job of high quality that has been going on for thirty years now.
The wines of Poggio Bertaio
The Sangiovese and Bordeaux varieties are the main grapes processed, and the selections compete very well with many better known bottles both in Umbria and in Tuscany. But the line has expanded in more recent years, and now includes a Grechetto , a Rosè , and, probably more important for consumers, a series of regular bottlings ( Rosso Umbria and Stucchio ) that are really excellent and sold at prices which, of these times, seem almost unreal. The selections , however, Cimbalo and Crovello , remain of greater interest for those looking for both an impeccable Sangiovese and the now classic blends of Sangiovese and Merlot. And in the best years, for the most demanding wine lovers, a super selection, Apo , named after the nickname of Ciufoli’s son.
