Poggio Graffetta

Poggio Graffetta

(MODICA – RAGUSA) Tenuta Calì manages four estates in Italy. The estate in Sicily is called Poggio Graffetta and mainly produces Nero d’Avola, but also Syrah. It is located in the Val di Noto in the province of Ragusa.

Poggio Graffetta’s History and Philosophy

Poggio Graffetta in Sicily is part of the Tenute Calì wine group which include: Rocca di Castagnoli in Gaiole in Chianti in the province of Siena in the heart of the Chianti Classico, Poggio Maestrino in Maremma, in the municipality of Magliano, the latter in Tuscany.

Realities born thanks to the great passion for wine of the Calì family, now represented by Alessandro and Francesco , who in the 2000s decided to invest not only in Tuscany but also in his homeland in the Val di Noto area , between Modica and Noto in the municipality of Ispica in the province of Ragusa , with the purchase of Tenuta Graffetta.

Poggio Graffetta Ragusa

This area boasts a tradition dating back to the seventeenth century, a temperate Mediterranean type climate and geologically the area is formed by the large Hyblean table, which is made up of sedimentary layers and outcrops of prehistoric lavas relating to the phenomena of Hyblean volcanism, make the land rich in minerals and where the wine production is noteworthy, thanks also to its sea breezes that mitigate temperatures by offering a warm, dry and windy climate, in fact the sea is a few kilometers away.

The wines of Poggio Graffetta

From 22 hectares of vineyards, they produce powerful and concentrated wines. It is here where the Nero d’Avola is the undisputed protagonist of this wine-making production. It has a difficult and laborious cultivation, which is faced with skill and accompanied by international grapes that give to the wine a completeness. With relation to the reds, The Syrah is vinified alone and then blended with Cabernets and the Petit Verdot. For the whites however, only the native Grillo, at 600 meters above sea level, is cultivated in the vineyard called Segesta.

Val di Noto wines Poggio Graffetta

The winery is dedicated to a simple and traditional practice and the small production is structured on four labels: the Grillo and the Nero d’Avola, vinified in purity, truly excellent, and the two IGT: Syrah and Hyspa, a Cabernet blend Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Syrah.

All wines are the result of a calling that the wine group Tenute Calì, always with the same passion, has been pursuing for almost forty years, and where the special force behind the production is the beauty and charm of its lands, which only places of wine can boast, as it ensures that in a simple sip an emotion becomes a concrete reality.
