Salvatore Molettieri

(MONTEMARANO – AVELLINO) Salvatore Molettieri fits perfectly with the discussions on red wines from Campania from Irpinia Aglianico and Taurasi with his excellent wines produced in Montemarano in the province of Avellino.

Salvatore Molettieri’s History & Terroir

Montemarano is a town in the hinterland of the province of Avellino , far from the characteristics that come to mind at first, thinking of Campania: sea, solar heat and the joy of Naples. The town is located on top of the hills, which become even higher when you go even further inland, towards the mountains that divide Campania and the western part of Italy from Puglia and the eastern part of the country, overlooking the Adriatic sea. In Montemarano, in fact, the altitude is over 750 meters above sea level, the winters are therefore long and cold, and the summer temperatures are well below the peaks made further north in cities such as Florence and Bolzano. Anyone who thinks that the south of Italy enjoys a mild, almost tropical climate will be faced with an unpleasant surprise if he visits these areas in January.

One might be led to think that it is not a suitable place for viticulture, but, instead, Montemarano was from the beginning a very appreciated source for Aglianico grapes , requested by the major houses of the province. The variety, although of Greek origin, prefers a climate with a reasonable, but not excessive, heat, a long and continuous seasonal growth that allows the ripening process to proceed as gradually as possible, even if this means that the harvest must to be very late. Even beyond the All Saints day in early November, if the vintage was particularly cold.

Philosophy of Salvatore Molettieri

All this has been concretely demonstrated since the 1990s by the superb wines created by Salvatore Molettieri, when he began to bottle most of his production, instead of selling his grapes to large merchant houses. The exceptional quality of the production was quickly recognized and the Molettieri name became a point of reference in all discussions on Aglianico and the Taurasi appellation. Powerful, deep and intense, its wines indicate why Aglianico has joined Nebbiolo and Sangiovese as one of the great red grape varieties.

The line includes an Irpinia Aglianico Cinque Querce that rivals many Taurasi, a Taurasi Vigna Cinque Querce that looks like a Reserve, and a Taurasi Vigna Cinque Querce  Riserva which is simply one of the best wines in Italy. And all this achieved in a short period of time, a remarkable result.
