Santa Barbara

(BARBARA – ANCONA) Among the hills of Jesi, in the Marche region, in an ancient monastery stands this company that has made defense and support of the Marche region its flag. The owner, Stefano Antonucci, with a team of experts, cultivates Verdicchio and Montepulciano grapes to obtain excellent wines.

Santa Barbara’s History and Philosophy

The Marche region is very active in the wine sector and among the areas that most reflect a high quality production there is the arsenal of the Jesin hills and the various surrounding municipalities, including Barbara, a medieval village with a glorious past. Here is the Santa Barbara company , an authoritative reality, which is located inside an ancient monastery in the province of Ancona, about 25 km from the Adriatic Sea.

Managed by the charismatic Stefano Antonucci, who has always wanted and put into practice two simple principles for his business: enhancing local vines, such as Verdicchio and Montepulciano and producing internationally based wines Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah .

Terroir of the Wine of Santa Barbara

This has all been possible not only in thanks to its great entrepreneurial capacity but also for the exceptional conditions of the cultivation area: the classic Verdicchio area on whose hills, with about 45 hectares, are grown vineyards between 25 and 40 years old.

Vines enjoy an excellent microclimate, a fantastic exposure, and a very favorable soil composition, mainly of a medium clayey and limestone-rich mixture.

The guyot plant is used for the Verdicchio and the other white berries and the spurred cordon plant for the red grapes.Operations in the cellar are led by Stefano Antonucci and trusted oenologist Pierluigi Lorenzetti and his team, composed of Renzo, Roberto, and Daniele. This team, combining science, experience and the technologies available, have made it possible over the years to relaunch the great native vines of the area, Montepulciano and Verdicchio in the first place, chosing to work with the most valuable features of this fascinating territory.

The wines of Santa Barbara

The current production of Santa Barbara’s wines has a wide range and makes 900,000 bottles a year50% of which is exported all over the world. A production where, year after year, the quality standard of the raw material improves through the practice of thinning and obsessive attention to the health of the grapes. This methodology is also applied to their production of extra virgin olive oil.

Among the various labels offered, we will point out wines that have received awards and important mentions over the years, such as: Verdicchio Castelli di Jesi DOC classico superiore Stefano Antonucci, Verdicchio Castelli di Jesi Organic Doc Back to Basics, Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva Docg Late Classic Ma Not Late, the Marche Igt Merlot Mossone and finally the Rosso Piceno the Maschio da Monte.

A last note of merit deserves to be awarded for the great attention to social issues that Stefano Antonucci, in recent years, through cooperative and fundraising projects, manages to address, supporting local associations.
