Scacciadiavoli

L'azienda vinicola Scacciadiavoli a Montefalco

(MONTEFALCO – PERUGIA)  Scacciadiavoli produces red and white wines in Montefalco, Umbria. Montefalco Rosso, Montefalco Sagratino and Sagratino Passito are absolutely fine red wines. Montefalco Bianco, based on Grecchetto, Trebbiano and Chadonnay, is an interesting white wine.

Scacciadiavoli’s History and Philosophy

Umbria is not a major force in Italian wine – its 32,500 acres of vineyards represent a mere 2% of the national total and the annual production  of 475,00 hectoliters is normally little more than 1% of the country’s 45 million. Production is divided up into  a series of small appellations, with only Orvieto as a major force in terms of bottles on the market.

It is, accordingly, quite surprising that the small town of Montefalco and its surroundings can now count on over  2200 acres of appellation vineyards and its wines have won an important reputation in markets which count. Initially working as well – certainly no advantage – with a little known grape, Sagrantino, one which had the reputation of giving wines of tremendous force but of an intensity and concentration which made for difficult drinking.

Montefalco, therefore, can rightly be considered a gratifying success story and, while the area can boast certain houses with a documented tradition, a large number have sprung up over the past 15-20 years. The Scacciadiavoli winery of the Pambuffetti family is perhaps the leading example of a house which represents real continuity in the zone.

Founded in 1884, it took its name from an exorcist who lived close to the property and used the wine for her demon-ridding rites. The imposing cellars, acquired in 1954, are both attractive in and of themselves, and a testimony to the families which believed in the territory and have been suitably rewarded for their convictions by the success of the name Montefalco.

The wines of Scacciadiavoli

In the case of the Pambuffetti, serious commitment to high level work arrived in the early years of the new millennium and consisted of two major steps: first, important investments in new technology which nonetheless, left the architectural elements of the past in place. A decision which has allowed the production to take place in as natural a way as possible, the wine is moved by gravity flow, the gentlest possible manner. The second move was the engagement of the services of consulting oenologist Stefano Chioccioli who, working with brothers FrancescoCarlo, and Amilcare Pambuffetti, has moved Scacciadiavoli into the front ranks of producers both of Sagrantino and of Rosso di Montefalco.
