Silvano Bolmida

(MONFORTE D’ALBA – CUNEO) The wines of Silvano Bolmida, produced in Monforte d’Alba, occupy important positions among the wines of Italy. Note of particular merit to Barolo Bussia, Barolo Vigne dei Fantini and Bussia Riserva.

The history and philosophy of Silvano Bolmida

The Alba wine school has long trained the children of local growers, many of whom have had major success in the family cellars. Coterno, Vietti, Brovia are just some of the names that, with the addition of a solid tradition of well-made wines, have combined theory with practice, science with generations of ancient methods of working vineyards and grapes, which distinguish this area, the cradle of the best and most prestigious wine in Italy, Barolo.

Silvano Bolmida is the owner of the family winery, and his name is less known than that of the larger houses with generations of experience, but his wines show that the teachings he received at the Alba school have been very beneficial. To the point that, as a former student, then in charge of the cellar in a main Barolo house, then a teacher in Alba, he demonstrated a multifaceted ability shared by few of his peers. Although famous names in Bordeaux, Emile Peynaud and Denis Dubordieu, confirm that the ability to teach and talent in the cellars are not at all difficult to reconcile, quite the contrary.

The wines of Silvano Bolmida

The 6 hectares of Bolmida possessions are small in size, but, in many places, occupy prime positions in Monforte d’Alba. Bolmida is not limited to Nebbiolo and its barrel-aged Barbera Conca del Grillo is rightly considered a classic example of how to age this wine in oak without weighing it down with too many flavors and heaviness. And, from a cool place once occupied by the Dolcetto grape, it now produces a fragrant and vibrant Sauvignon Blanc.

Nebbiolo, however, remains the main focus in what could be called its “younger brother” version, Langhe Nebbiolo but in particular in its pleasant Barolo offerings, firm and solid, elegant and sustained, important, but without excess of any kind. Bolmida used his education and scientific knowledge, his decades of experience, and his years of experimentation to develop an entirely personal technique based on the length of the aging period on the sediments in the barrel. And the results are both flawless and exemplary: Barolo Bussia, Barolo Vigne dei Fantini and Bussia Riserva. Limited in number, but only the best.
