Sordo Giovanni

(CASTIGLIONE FALLETTO – CUNEO) Sordo Giovanni is a single family that owns over 50 hectares of vineyards between Langhe and Roero. For four generations they have been producing exceptional wines such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera D’Alba and much more.

Sordo’s Wines History

The Sordo Giovanni winery produces wines in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of the Barolo appellation in the province of Cuneo. The family-run winery was founded in 1912 and became famous with the great contribution of Giovanni Sordo.

The winery now owns 53 hectares of vineyards and produces a very wide range of wines. Of great interest are the Crus from 5 different Municipalities that give life to wines each with a different territorial identity: Perno, Gabutti, Ravera, Rocche di Castiglione, Parussi, Monvigliero, Villero and Monprivato.

Sordo Wines & Terroir

The soil is extremely suitable for these crops as it consists mainly of calcareous marl rich in microelements.
The microclimate and the ideal exposures favor a perfect ripening of the grapes and to give life to long-lived wines of great evolutionary potential, but also great elegance and aromatic finesse thanks to the significant temperature excursions.

But without the hand of man, such qualitative excellence would not be achieved.

The techniques and knowledge have been handed down from father to son for four generations, who have worked and work in a careful and meticulous way. The farm was founded during the early years of the twentieth century, in 1912 by Giuseppe Sordo, but the turning point towards quality was undertaken by Giovanni Sordo who together with his wife Maria bought several vineyards of Nebbiolo.

The Philosophy of Sordo’s Wines

Today the tradition of Sordo wines continues with the management of Giorgio and his daughter Paola, the fourth generation; are taking the company to the highest levels with national and international recognition, with an eye in particular to the defense of the earth, following the suggestions of modern agriculture.

In fact, for the Sordo winery, environmental sustainability and biodiversity is an absolute priority, which is why chemical fertilizers and herbicides are not allowed in their production.

It should not be surprising that this is a completely traditional company in processing: in fact the tradition requires long macerations with a ‘submerged cap’, and nothing could be more classic than the subsequent aging in Slavonian oak barrels of great capacity to embellish, but also preserve The varietal character of Nebbiolo.

But the results speak for themselves: excellence, classicism, fidelity to a great tradition, are a truly winning trio.

Sordo Wines

Azienda Sordo Giovanni is one of the few to boast 8 different Barolo crus obtained from 5 different municipalities of the denomination.
Each of these Cru di Barolo expresses a unique territoriality and vocation and gives life to wines different in character, but linked by a common thread, that is the essential elegance that distinguishes the entire line of Sordo wines.

Among the Barolo crus of great interest the Barolo Riserva Parussi, with silky, balsamic and enveloping tannins, or Barolo Riserva Ravera, very complex and elegant that spreads a bouquet of dried flower potpourri embellished with very delicate oaky notes.

Also of great interest is the Barolo Riserva Perno, penetrating and harmonious, with great iodized flavor on the palate, but also the Barolo Riserva Gabutti, an exciting wine that offers clear and seductive fruity-floral nuances, roasting and nuances of sweet spices.

But certainly the excellent Barolo Riserva Rocche di Castiglione, an opulent wine with great structure and sensational evolutionary potential, and Barolo Riserva Monvigliero, more slender with soft tannins and the interesting alternating notes of acidity and savoriness that makes the sip engaging, must also be taken into consideration.

But obviously other Sordo wines cannot be missing, directly from tradition such as the inevitable and captivating Barbaresco, or the Dolcetto D’Alba with incisive fruity notes and the Barbera d’Alba, of sensational freshness and enjoyment.

The proposal of white wines from Sordo is also very convincing, ranging from traditional indigenous vines such as Arneis to international grapes such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Viognier.
