Tenuta Castelbuono

(BEVAGNA – PERUGIA) I Lunelli, a family famous for the production of Trento DOC Ferrari sparkling wines, also heads the Tenuta Castelbuono in Umbria. In Montefalco they produce red wine Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG Carapace in the cellar-sculpture made by Maestro Arnaldo Pomodoro.

Tenuta Castelbuono’s History and Philosophy

The Lunelli family , strengthened by the three generations of winemaking experience in the production of Ferrari Trento docs, in the 1980s decided to add a collection of still wines to the bubbles, using the experience gained over the years of mountain viticulture with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Thus was born the project of Tenute Lunelli, which leads to the creation of elegant wines based on Chardonnay, Villa Margon and Pietragrande, and a pure Pinot Noir such as Maso Montalto.

Starting from the 2000s, the gaze widened and attention was directed to territories with a consolidated vocation for the production of great red wines; the first choice falls on Tuscany, among the Pisan hills, on a splendid vineyard knoll in the locality of Terricciola, where Sangiovese is the production base. Thus was born the Podernovo Estate, which offers Teuto, Sangiovese in purity, and Aliotto, a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot.

In 2001, however, it was the turn of an ancient and mystical land like Umbria and a wine of great power and longevity such as Sagrantino : 30 hectares were acquired in Bevagna and Montefalco , partly already planted, where Carapace would rise years later , the cellar-sculpture made by Maestro Arnaldo Pomodoro.
The challenge that the Lunelli family wanted to undertake both in Tuscany and in Umbria was to maintain the link with the land and the expressiveness of the grape variety that represents it, but to distinguish their wines with a sort of “stamp” , which is undoubtedly elegance.

The wines of Tenuta Castelbuono

The Sagrantino is a powerful wine, mainly because of the intensity of its tannins and immediately the target of Lunelli was to make it, however, an elegant wine and balanced. The result was achieved thanks to an important job in the vineyard, where we tried to bring the grapes to a high degree of maturity, to soften the tannin, but also in the cellar, where aging in large oak barrels knows enhance the balance, while maintaining its power.

So both Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG like Carapace , and Montefalco Rosso IGT , the classic Rosso of the area, a blend of Sangiovese and Sagrantino, represented by Ziggurat and Lampante , now compete with the best wines of the appellation and are highly appreciated by experts who are looking for strong emotions and sensations.
