Tenuta Fanti

Tenuta Fanti

A family history of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Montalcino, which over the centuries has produced highly appreciated red and rosé wines.

Tenuta Fanti’s History and Philosophy

Unlike a number of large Italian wine-growing areas,  Montalcino  has few of what could be called “first families” in its denomination. The impetuous development of his viticulture that began in the late 70s led to a huge increase in the size of the area under the vineyards, but apart from these historical names such as Biondi-Santi, Colombini Cinelli, Lisini and Costanti, few producers can boast more of a generation of work. And even less of a long fame and visibility.

A family, however, who can undoubtedly claim to have  deep roots  in the town, are the  Fanti of Castelnuovo dell’Abate , the village in the southern part of Montalcino. They have resided here since the 19th century, but until the mid-1980s they were known mainly as olive oil producers: their family-run mill worked not only for their olive groves but also for many of the small owners of this part of the city. Even small quantities of wine were made, but it was only with  Filippo Santi  that it was understood what the continuous planting of new Sangiovese vineyards meant  in 1980, and it was always Filippo who wanted to quickly participate in what was obviously the beginning of a new and very important role for his birthplace. And in this case we are talking about an important project: their land of vineyards has now reached 50 hectares, becoming a significant heritage in the general panorama of the city. The vineyards themselves enjoy excellent positions and exposures, partly south of Castelnuovo dell’Abate and partly near the pretty monastery of  Abbazia di Sant’Antimo.

The wines of Tenuta Fanti

These are excellent sites and when the sale is positive, production can reach over 60 thousand bottles of  Brunello di Montalcino , a line that includes both a  Riserva  and a new selection of a single vineyard,  Vallocchio , and another 50 thousand bottles of  Rosso di Montalcino . Even  Vin Santo It is a traditional product of the Fanti family, produced for 200 years now with the method of drying with penzane and aging in caratelli, some 90 years old. A series of talented wine consultants contributed to the development of the winery’s work, while  Elisa Fanti , who studied agriculture in Florence, supervises the vineyard operations. And success in the new century – now the third – seems well secured.
