Tenuta Parco dei Monaci

Tenuta Parco dei Monaci

(MONTESCAGLIOSO – MATERA) Matteo Trabacca has recently taken over the reins of Tenuta Parco dei Monaci, producing wines of great thickness. Spaccasassi, a red wine blend of Primitivo, Cabernet and Merlot, is something entirely new for Basilicata. Another excellent rosé wine is Rosato di Matera.

Tenuta Parco dei Monaci’s History and Philosophy

For many years the most significant production of wine in Basilicata essentially consisted of a wine and a grape: Aglianico del Vulture , obviously produced from the Aglianico grape. This red wine is grown mainly in the province of Potenza , in the north-west. This grape is so relevant in this area that it deserved the nickname of Barolo del Sud , both because they share some common characteristics with the famous red Piedmont wine (type of production and taste) and for the importance it can boast in this region of Italy, exactly equal to the importance of Piedmontese Barolo.

More recently, however, a second production center has been opened in the province of Matera , in the southwest of Basilicata. The city of Matera owes its international fame to the “Sassi” district, the only urban agglomeration in Europe inhabited continuously since prehistoric times. Proclaimed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site , the city will be the European Capital of Culture for the year 2019.

And the new viticulture that now characterizes the area also has many similarities with Puglia. And its most complete expression is the current offer of Tenuta Parco dei Monaci , once part of the Abbey of Montecaglioso. Launched by the spouses Rosa Padula and Matteo Trabacca a decade ago, it has been relaunched as a company producing excellent wine, as it has actually shown, also helped by the exceptional efforts made by Vincenzo Mercurio, wine consultant.

The wines of Tenuta Parco dei Monaci

These wines, produced with attention and competence, are worthy rivals of the best offers of Puglia, whose Primitivo grape, first identified with Gioia del Colle in the late 18th century, is of fundamental importance also in this area. Both the warm and rich Primitivo- based red wine and the fragrant and elegant Rosé from Matera show the classic personality of the grapes and, in addition, an admirable balance and expressiveness. And, Spaccasassi , a blend of Primitivo, Cabernet and Merlot, is something entirely new and excellent in the regional panorama.
