Tenuta Waldgries’s History and Philosophy

For many Italians, South Tyrol is a kind of mystery and its wines, although now much better known than in the past, are probably even more mysterious. Although the bulk of the production is rather standard, Chardonnay , Pinot Blanc , Sauvignon , Pinot Gris , Cabernet and Merlot , an important part uses grape varieties that are grown only here: Schiava and Lagrein as regards red wines, Grüner Veltliner , Sylvaner and Kerner for whites. 

But, already in the 1930s, Santa Maddalena , one of the classic and historical names of the province of Bolzano , was included in an official list of the best Italian wines, and even now this fresh, fruity and elegant wine is one of the best examples of this which can be obtained with Schiava grapes . Obviously, when grown well in the vineyard and worked with respect and passion in the cellar. 

One of the most respected manufacturers of Santa Maddalena is held Waldgries   of Christian Plattner , cited in print around 800 years ago in 1242. The property is situated to the northeast of the city of Bolzano , where the land begins to rise, from Santa Giustina towards the Renon plateau , from the heat of the Bolzano plateau towards the cooler climate of the higher altitudes, and pergola-grown vineyards begin to appear on the slopes. The soil is the typical mix of gravel and porphyritic rock, and here Schiava has found a home where she can express herself to the fullest.

Christian Plattner, comunque, non si limita affatto a questa varietà d’uva. Lui ed i suoi amici, Günther Kerschbaumer dell’azienda vinicola Köfererhof e Markus Prackweiser della tenuta Unteganzner, sono  dedicati alla ricerca di una piena espressione delle capacità del loro territorio e questo si può sentire in ogni vino prodotto: il saporito Sauvignon Myra ed il vibrante Pinot Blanc Isos, l’eccellente Lagrein selections, Mirell e la Riserva, il delizioso vino da dessert, un passito Moscato Rosa, e, non c’è bisogno di dirlo, il Santa Maddalenna Classico Antheos , produced from old selected vineyards replanted by Plattner himself , a contribution to the viticulture of the appellation of priceless value.
